Cadbury Pep - Canadian Peppermint Patty Review

$

0

When The Canada Shop got in touch with me to review some snacks from their site recently I jumped at the chance. I've always viewed Canadian snacks longingly online but rarely bought any as they're so hard to find in the UK...so I was very excited!

One of the snacks I was sent was this Cadbury Pep, a round of peppermint fondant patty coated in milk chocolate. I've never seen this product before from Cadbury so it was a completely new one on me! And considering Cadbury in the UK don't currently make any minty chocolate bars this seemed very novel indeed.

It's basically a large, thick round of After Eight-style fondant coated with milk chocolate rather than dark chocolate, and is very tasty! It had a creamy peppermint flavour that wasn't too overwpowering, and surprisingly the level of sweetness was just about right. I don't know how they managed it but this was nowhere near as sickly sweet as I had expected it to be. That said, it's probably best to share one with a friend just out of generosity!

Overall, Cadbury Pep is a surprisingly tasty snack which I would recommend to anyone who likes After Eights or Kendal Mint Cakes.

Cadbury Pep is available from The Canadian Store HERE along with many other Canadian snacks goodies!

Allan's Sour Watermelon Slices Review (Canadian sweets)

$

As well as the Cadbury Pep chocolate I reviewed yesterday, The Canada Shop also sent me a bag of these Allen's Sour Watermelon Slices to review. They instantly reminded me of some jelly sweets I've tried before...the Limited Edition Haribo Tangfastics with Sour Watermelon Slices I reviewed earlier in the year.

The main difference between these and the Haribo Watermelon Slices is that they're brighter and more artificial in colour:

They tasted nice enough - they were pleasantly sour and very chewy, although the flavour was a little on the artificial side. If you're a fan of watermelon flavoured sweets you'll probably get a kick out of these, but personally I much preferred the Tangfastics with Watermelon Slices.

Overall, these are definitely a nice novelty and great for anyone who likes watermelon flavour sweets, but they're not really to my taste.

RATING: 6 out of 10.

You can purchase these sweets as well as many other Canadian goodies from The Canada Shop's Online Store.

Gnaw Mint Choc Chip (White Chocolate & Mint) Bar Review

$

It's been ages now since I bought this Gnaw Mint Choc Chip bar; it somehow managed to get stuck beneath the landslide of other products I have waiting in the wings for review! But as we're getting closer to Christmas I think it's the perfect time to show it off, with mint being a flavour often associated with the season.

I bought this bar not long after trying the Gnaw Go Bananas variety, and chose it because of the cool-looking green-coloured white chocolate. It really does look fantastic and I can see why Gnaw use clear packaging - their chocolate looks so funky it deserves showing off!

Of course, it tasted just as delicious as it looked. The mintiness was perfectly complimented by the creamy white chocolate - it tasted fresh, clean and light...that's the best way I can describe it! It was a breath of fresh air (excuse the pun) in terms of mint chocolate, because sometimes I find the combination of dark chocolate and mint to be a little harsh. I wasn't sure that white chocolate and mint would work, but it really really does! There were bits of dark chocolate chips studded throughout the bar too that added some bursts of richer chocolate flavour, which was very welcome and complimented the sweeter white chocolate perfectly.

Overall, this is a tasty bar from Gnaw and one I can't praise highly enough. Not only is it great quality, it looks funky too and if that's not enough it's hand made in Britain! There's not many companies left in the UK doing fun chocolates like this so I can't commend Gnaw enough.

I'm still on the lookout for the peanut butter variety but no luck so far! I do hope Gnaw get better distribution for their bars in the future as they're quite hard to find - they deserve to be a big hit!

RATING: 9 out of 10.

Nestlé Big Turk - Canadian Turkish Delight Bar Review

$

0

Amongst the goodies The Canada Shop recently sent me was this "Big Turk" bar, a turkish delight bar made by the Canadian arm of Nestlé. Being a fan of turkish delight chocolates ever since I was a kid I was very excited to try it, more so because it looked like a pretty substantial bar in comparison to the small bars of Fry's Turkish Delight we get here in the UK.

The bar has a rather interesting curved shape, and is perfectly portioned to bite off into small chunks:

The wrapper advertises the fact that this bar contains 60% less fat than an average chocolate bar, although I'm not sure what they're comparing it to, and besides... "less fat" doesn't mean anything if it doesn't taste any good!

Taste-wise the milk chocolate coating is standard Nestlé milk chocolate - slightly milky but nothing amazing. The turkish delight filling, which as you can hopefully see from my pics has a bright pink colour, is very thick and chewy, with a vague hint of rose flavouring. It's very sweet, and tastes more like a hard gummy candy than turkish delight. It was far too chewy...I felt like I was like eating gummy bears coated in chocolate (not as nice as it sounds!)

Overall, as interesting as this bar is in appearance it let me down in taste. It's just far too chewy; if they had made the texture slightly softer and added a stronger turkish delight flavour I think I'd have enjoyed it a lot more. Still, it's an interesting novelty for sure and don't let me put you off trying one - I'm notoriously fussy!

RATING: 6.5 out of 10.

Do take a moment to check out The Canada Shop's range of groceries and snacks. They have a particularly nice looking selection of maple syrups, as well as various Cadbury and Nestlé bars we can't get here in the UK!

Terry's White Chocolate Orange Review

$
0
0

This white chocolate version of Terry's Chocolate Orange isn't new as far as I'm aware...it's been around intermittently since the early 2000's with names such as "Snowball", but nevertheless it's again being billed as "new" on most confectionery news websites. It's made by Kraft, who now have larger distribution power to sell their goods in the UK thanks to buying out Cadbury - so expect to see a lot more Chocolate Oranges in the future!

Although this isn't really "new", it's technicaly new this year since for the last few Christmases Terry's did the White Chocolate Orange Smasher instead, which contained tutti frutti sugar pieces. Personally I thought that was a lot more fun than this plain white chocolate version...the fruity pieces looked really cool and were a nice change!

Still, I can't complain too much because this White Chocolate Orange tastes great. It's a lot milkier and of course sweeter than the Milk Chocolate version, but it's still very moreish and I'm sure kids will love it. Infact, I actually preferred it over the Milk version...just goes to show I'm really a big kid at heart!

Overall, this isn't really anything all that "new", infact I think Kraft have taken a back-step by replacing the Chocolate Orange Smasher with this...but nevertheless it's still a tasty variation of Chocolate Orange and all fans of white chocolate should give it a try!

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Rococo Bee Bars: Raspberry Fizz, Basil & Lime, Moroccan Mint & Honeycomb Crunch - Review

$

0

I was delighted when Rococo Chocolates sent me some of their mini "Bee bars" to review recently. I'd heard good things about the company online for ages but never got to try any of their stuff so was very excited...even more so because of the varieties they sent! :-

Raspberry Fizz: a white chocolate bar containing dried rasberry pieces and popping candy, Basil & Persian Lime: basil and lime flavoured dark chocolate,
Moroccan Mint: mint-flavoured organic dark chocolate,
Honeycomb Crunch: milk chocolate containing crunchy honeycomb pieces.

The first two flavours in particular had me very intrigued!

A bit of background: Rococo are a small British chocolatier based in London, who grow their own cocoa in Grenada in partnership with The Grenada Chocolate Company. They were founded in 1983 by a young woman called Chantal Coady who became bored with the stuffy, commercial norms of chocolate retailing and decided to follow her passion and set up her own company. For more on Rococo's background you can check out their website HERE.

So how does their chocolate taste? Pretty amazing, as it turns out! Below are my thoughts on each "Bee bar":

Raspberry Fizz:

Unfortunately this bar had broken apart in the post, which is a shame because it's really quite beautiful - very clean and glossy, with a fantastically moulded bee shape on each piece. The chocolate tasted very light and creamy, and melted in the mouth with ease. The raspberry pieces added a lovely fruity zing whilst the popping candy gave a gentle crackle in the mouth. It wasn't particularly strong - just a light, pleasant fizzing sensastion, which I imagine is welcome news to those who hate popping candy! Overall, a good quality and fun white chocolate bar - highly recommend! 9 out of 10.

Basil & Persian Lime:

This bar was also unfortunately damaged in the post, and on smelling the faint aroma of basil coming from it I was worried I wouldn't enjoy this at all. Placing a piece in my mouth I was met with a rich dark chocolate with a subtle basil flavour, and at first couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. Then the flavour of lime kicked in, tempering the herby flavour and giving it a refreshing fruitiness. After getting over the shock of eating herb flavoured chocolate I actually rather enjoyed it...the flavours work together surprisingly well! Overall, as weird as this bar sounds it was a revelation to me - highly recommended! 9 out of 10.

Moroccan Mint:

I kind of expected this one to taste of a generic minty chocolate, but it turned out to be a lot nicer than that! The dark chocolate very rich and flavoursome, and the peppermint added a soothing, subtle mint flavour. Overall, a nice balance of richness and mintiness. 9 out of 10.

Honeycomb Crunch:

Last but not least is this Honeycomb Crunch bar. It tasted delicious, with creamy melt-in-the mouth milk chocolate that was rich and flavoursome, with the sweet bits of honeycomb giving it a lovely crunch. It's a simple but moreish combination. 9 out of 10.

Overall:
Well I have to say Rococo really surprised me with these bars; each and every one of them was delicious in its own right and all were excellent quality. The Basil and Lime and Raspberry Fizz stood out most thanks to their interesting flavour combinations - they're very unique bars, and I think Chantal Coady has kept true to her vision of producing exciting chocolates that are anything but "stuffy"!

Hotel Chocolat The Classic Christmas Sleekster Selection Review

$

When offered a box of this "Sleekster Classic Christmas Selection" from Hotel Chocolat to review recently, I naturally jumped at the chance. Hotel Chocolat's stuff is always impeccable quality, but I have limited experience with their mixed boxes so wasn't quite sure what to expect.

I needn't have worried, because as always Hotel Chocolat have come up with a fantastically presented box of chocolates. It's a selection that should cater to everyone's tastes, although if you don't like alcoholic chocolates I'm afraid this isn't for you - I would recommend going for the Winter Desserts Sleekster instead. (I must admit I'm not a great fan of alcoholic chocolates myself, but I wasn't about to let that stop me from trying these!)

The selection comprises of fruity chocolates, nuts, alcohol and spices in milk, dark and white chocolate. Below are my thoughts on each flavour:

Chambard Royale:

"A real Champagne truffle blended with black raspberry liqueur" - I'm not a big fan of alcohol-filled chocolates but this really worked thanks to the creaminess of the white chocolate, with the raspberry liquer adding a fruity edge that wasn't overpowering. Creamy, fresh and very tasty! 8 out of 10.

Christmas Mess:

"Fabulously fruity cranberry ganache and strawberry mousse with meringue sprinkles" - This one was absolutely delicious...the sharpness of the cranberry was nicely balanced by the fruity strawberry mousse, whilst the white chocolate provided a creamy backdrop. The meringue pieces added a welcome crunch. Very yummy and a perfect Christmas-themed chocolate! 9 out of 10.

Cranberry Cup:

"Invigoratingly tangy cranberries blended in a more-cocoa white chocolate ganache" - this tasted sharp and fruity but also very smooth thanks to the white chocolate. I could eat these all day - they're much nicer than the fruit cremes found in regular chocolate selections! 9 out of 10.

Rum Punch:

"A creamy milk truffle with ginger and orange and lashings of premium Jamaican rum" - I'm not a great fan of alcoholic chocolates so wasn't too keen on this - it was a little strong for my tastes. However, fans of rum chocolates will no doubt love it as the quality is excellent.

Nutmeg & Almond Praline:

"An elegant almond praline in white chocolate enhanced with a hint of nutmeg"- This praline was very creamy and nutty, with the strong nutmeg flavour giving it a Christmassy feel. Very tasty indeed! 8 out of 10.

White Chocolate & Vanilla Bell:

White Vanilla Bell, Dark Christmas Tree, 50% Milk Bauble
"Cast in our exquisitely creamy more-cocoa white chocolate with vanilla essence and seeds" - This tasted amazing. Hotel Chocolat's white Chocolate is always exceptional quality and that was very evident here; it melted in the mouth beautifully and tasted creamy without being overly sweet. The vanilla seeds enhanced the flavour even further. 9 out of 10.

Dark Christmas Tree:
"Cast in our classically smooth dark chocolate with deep aromas and punchy cocoa notes" - this had the classic taste of Hotel Chocolat's dark chocolate; it was rich without tasting bitter, and melted in the mouth perfectly. 8.5 out of 10.

50% Milk Bauble:
"Deeply chocolaty but still gorgeously milky – made with less sugar and more cocoa" - this is a richer take on milk chocolate, and all the more delicious for it. A perfect balance of rich cocoa with a hint of creaminess. 8.5 out of 10.

Pistachio Praline Crunch:

"Pistachio praline with cherry pieces and a hint of rose crowned with a whole pistachio nut" - this chocolate looked fantastic and tasted extremely smooth and nutty, with the cherry pieces adding a hint of fruitiness. Very rich and satisfying. 8 out of 10.

Mulled Port:

"A deliciously warming truffle with our own ruby port, spiced with Pimento leaf and bitter orange" - Like the other alcoholic chocolates I wasn't a fan of this one, but anyone who loves a good quality alcoholic chocolate will no doubt enjoy it a lot!

Marzipan & Amaretto Truffle:

"Fine almond marzipan softened with a splash of mellow amaretto" - The marzipan here is tasty and good quality, with the amaretto giving it a pleasant flavour, but it was a little too alcoholic for my tastes. 7 out of 10.

Caramel Supernova:

"A star of oozingly soft caramel paired with our 70% dark chocolate" - When I cut into this it unfortunately imploded, so apologies for the messy-looking pic. Perhaps that's what happens when it goes supernova?! It tasted delicious; the caramel centre was very gooey with a lovely buttery flavour that contrasted perfectly with the rich dark chocolate. 9 out of 10.

Praline Crisp Star:

"A rewarding contrast of smooth, mellow praline and masses of nibbly feuilletine" - This one was amazing...the praline tasted rich and melted in the mouth beautifully, with the crunchy feuilletine giving it an added crunchy moreishness. 9 out of 10.

Overall
Hotel Chocolat have done it again and put together a festive box which will surely please everyone. There's alcoholic chocolates, dark, white, fruity, nutty, caramel, and spiced...what more could you want?! Whilst I didn't enjoy the alcoholic chocolates, I would highly recommended this selection to those who like a good variety to share out with family over Christmas - ditch the Milk Tray and go for these instead!

Artisan Du Chocolat Magic Wands Review

$

Many thanks to Artisan Du Chocolat for sending me some of their "magic wands" chocolates to review recently. I was absolutely amazed by the gorgeous box they came in; it looks spectacular, one of the nicest boxes of chocolates I've ever seen in fact!

I wasn't sure what the "wands" were all about at first, I thought it was just another name for chocolate sticks like Matchmakers, but it turns out these are a lot more sophisticated than that! They contain different flavoured ganaches encased in high quality chocolate, and can be combined to create entirely new flavours...as if by magic!

The individual flavours are banana, pineapple, vanilla, strawberry, pear, raspberry, cinnamon and lemon. They can be combined to create these new flavours: vanilla & cinnamon = cola, raspberry & pear = apple, strawberry & vanilla = marshmallow, and raspberry & banana = bubble gum.

At first I thought this might be a bit of a gimmick, but combining the wands did actually transform them into totally new flavours. Magic indeed!

The quality of the chocolate was exceptional; the white chocolate tasted creamy and melt-in-the-mouth, the milk chocolate was also creamy but with a rich cocoa flavour, whilst the dark chocolate was rich and flavoursome without any bitterness.

Individually the wands tasted delicious, but I was more interested in the new flavours they would become!

The lemon and cinnamon "cola" combination was subtle, warming and slightly tangy, giving a nostalgic and fairly realistic cola flavour. "Marshamallow" was also very subtle, providing a comforting and realistic marshmallow flavour. "Bubblegum" was the most interesting  - it definitely had a familiar fruity bubblegum flavour, which was a bit odd combined with chocolate but it somehow worked!

Overall, I have to say these Magic Wands from Artisan Du Chocolat are truly fantastic - excellent quality, interesting flavours, beautifully presented, and most importantly fun. They're perfect for sharing with family at Christmas and would make a fantastic Christmas gift; forget Matchmakers and try these instead!

RATING: 9 out of 10.

Honest Best of British Snackorium & Banoffee Pie Chocolate Bar! - Review

$

0

A big thankyou to "Honest Foods" for sending me one of their snacking boxes to review recently! Honest are a quirky company specialiazing in "the best of British", and according to the message on the box they do not want to say "bonjour", "aloha" or "guten tag" to us...oh no, they want to say a very British "Hello!"

In keeping with this theme, their boxes only contain products made in Britain. This is a fantastic idea and one I very much applaud, since it's getting harder to find great quality products made in this country nowadays. Local is often best!

This box, or "Snakorium" as Honest calls it, included a lot of delicious items such as sweet chilli peanuts, lemon and ginger oat biscuits, a banoffee pie chocolate bar, Teapigs oolong tea, chilli billtong, and popping candy hot chocolate! It's a varied and interesting selection of stuff for sure.

Of course, being the chocoholic I am I went straight for the Banoffee Pie Truffle bar first! It's made by "With... chocolate", a family-run company in Belvoir who produce handmade chocolates in their cottage workshop, and this particular bar has won a "Great Taste 2013" award. The chocolate is described as a "Sumptuous milk chocolate bar with a creamy banana flavoured ganache and soft caramel filling". It was well presented and wrapped in brown foil (not many chocolate bars are wrapped in foil these days!) and a paper label. Ripping it open I found a delicious smelling bar with curved segments - it looked very unique:

Splitting a piece off revealed a chunk that's just perfect for popping in your mouth:

I think everyone will agree it looks amazing - the shape is so unique! The only thing I can really compare it to is the Nestlé Big Turk I reviewed recently, which was nowhere near as tasty as this bar.

Popping the segment in my mouth I was met with a delightfully creamy chocolate - it was obviously made with good quality ingredients. The banana ganache was divine; very creamy and with a comforting banana flavour. The caramel sat above it tasted very buttery and realistic - like something you would get on top of a Millioniare's Shortbread.

Overall this was a lovely bar of chocolate with a great combination of ingredients - fans of banana chocolates should definitely give it a try! I'm not sure where you can buy these in shops but you can order them on the "With Chocolate" website. They also do some other fantastic-sounding bars such as Strawberry & Cream with white chocolate, and Black Forest Gateau with dark chocolate!

I probably should have ate the chocolate along with this Teapigs Tung Ting Oolong which was also included in the box, but alas I just couldn't wait! It's named after the Taiwanese region where it grows, and is a part fermented tea with the strength of black tea and flavour of green tea. I thought it tasted very pleasant and full-bodied, with a strong earthy flavour. I really enjoyed it!

This Doves Farm Organic Banana, Mango and Brazil nut cereal bar contains dried banana and mango chips, as well as crispy rice and oats. It made for a great mid-morning snack and was full of chewy, crispy deliciousness - far nicer than some of the tasteless cereal bars you get in most supermarkets.

These "Mr Filbert's sweet chilli peanuts with juicy mango" were seriously addictive...I've never heard of this brand before but they certainly know how to make tasty nuts! (quite a feat!) Mr Filberts pride themselves on their "inventive snacks", and if you want to discover more creations you can check out mrfilberts.com. They also do Morrocan spiced almonds and french rosemary almonds.

These "Half Dipped Lemon and Ginger Mini-Bites" aka oat biscuits were also very nice...I ate them the British way of course; dunked in a cup of tea! (I'm sure Honest would approve). Taste-wise they were oaty, buttery, crumbly and moreish! The lemon and ginger flavour was subtle but delightful. They're made by "Frank's Luxury Biscuits" in Herefordshire.

Biltong isn't something I've eaten a lot of, but judging by this it's a moreish snack when  you want something meaty! Greeff's Air Cured Sweet Chilli Biltong is handmade on the Isle of Wight, from 100% British cows no less, so you needn't fear about eating anything imported. Whether or not it will contain horse though is another matter...

This Cocoa Antics "The Crackling One" was fantastic...it's a wooden spoon with a base of milk and dark chocolate and white chocolate star, which you stir into hot milk to make a hot chocolate drink...with the twist being that it contains popping candy! This made for a delicious hot chocolate and the popping candy was a fantastic touch...in fact, it made me wonder why there's no popping candy hot chocolates in supermarkets?! It was so nice I didn't get a chance to take a pic before devouring it. Coco Aantics describe themselves as "the playful chocolate company" and do a range of hot chocolate spoons their website cocoaantics.com.

Last but not least is these Bear Dino Paws which are tasty fruit-based snacks. I read an interesting article recently about how this brand is selling excellently in supermarkets, despite the fact most people go for junk food instead. I can certainly understand their popularity - they're seriously tasty! Unlike some healthy snacks, I didn't feel like I was eating vegetable sludge whilst chewing them...they were pleasantly fruity, chewy and moreish and kept me reaching for more! The paw shapes are really cool, and make them very appealing to kids (or big kids like me!) According to the packet the paws belong to different dinosaurs: t-rex, tricerotops, pterdocatyl, diplocodus and veloceraptor. They contain no added sugar or preservatives and the fruit used in them is never from concentrate. Overall, these are fun, healthy and tasty snacks!

Overall
Honest have put together a nice selection of British snacks here, which will surely appeal to anyone wanting something a bit more special and home-grown than what most supermarkets offer. I really like the fact they're supporting Bristish companies and wish them every success, especially as someone who is tired of poor quality imported snacks (as much fun as they can sometimes be). Honest's boxes change monthly so you'll always get something different to look forward to, and all products included have to pass a stringent "Honest Test" to make sure they're all British. These guys really are dedicated to their cause!

The boxes cost £9.99 a month with postage included - you can check out Honest's website HERE.

Well, there you have it...an honest review for some Honest foods. No auf wiedersehen or au revoirs from me today....just a good old old British "goodbye ladies and gentlemen", and thankyou for reading! ;)

New Soreen "Joy" Festive Malt Loaf Review

Whilst browsing the latest deals in Morrisons recently I spotted this new festive edition of Soreen, and being a big fan of the chewy, squidgy stuff I just had to give it a try. It's described as "Bursting with winter spices, raisins, currants, cherries, a hint of citrus and lots of festive joy!" and cost £1 on a promotional deal.

Basically, it tastes somewhat like a hybrid of christmas pudding and malt loaf...and tastes great! Like regular Soreen it has a delicious squidgy texture and is amazing spread thickly with butter. I tried it toasted which made it even more amazing...perfect with a cup of hot chocolate! The added spices, cherries and citrus really brought a Christmassy feel to it, and dare I say - it tasted better than the original.

Overall, this is a fantastic edition of Soreen and if you're a fan of malt loaf I would highly recommend seeking it out and stocking up before Christmas! I'll certainly be buying a few as gifts for the Soreen-lovers in my family! I've only seen these in Morrisons so far but no doubt they'll be hitting all the other major supermarkets soon.

Price: £1 at Morrisons.

Snickers Dark Chocolate (American version) Review

Earlier in the year I reviewed a Polish version of Snickers Dark. I wasn't too impressed with that bar, so I was a little skeptical when I received this American version from Monster Sweets to review recently. Would it be an improvement on the Polish version? Well yes, luckily it was!

The bar weighs in at 51.9g (such a weird amount...why couldn't they just make it 60g?) and comes in a funky dark purple wrapper. It really stands out compared to a regular Snickers wrapper although you'd be forgiven for thinking it was some kind of berry flavoured Snickers (now there's an idea!) It's described by Mars as "Just like Snickers Original, but with a higher percentage of cocoa".

Unwrapping it revealed a pretty regular looking Snickers. It didn't look much different from a UK milk chocolate Snickers although it was perhaps a tad darker in colour.

Luckily the dark chocolate was very noticeable in the taste and the bar tasted much richer than the milk chocolate version. It tempers the overall sweetness of the bar somewhat, and the combination of chewy nougat, sweet caramel and crunchy peanuts is as tasty as ever, and dare I say it this bar tastes even better than the original!

Overall, this is a great Snickers bar and an improvement on the regular version in my opinion. Whether or not you like it though will depend on your preferences for richer or sweeter chocolates.

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Snickers Dark is available from Monster Sweets Online Store, along with many other American snacks goodies!

Krüger Green Tea Chai Latte Drink with Ginger & Lemongrass Review

$

Just a quick review for this drink today - I've had it in the snacks archives for so long my memory of it is slightly hazy, but I certainly haven't forgotten how unique it was!

I found it in a discount store for 99p, and regrettably didn't stock up on more of them at the time. I haven't seen any since, although my local Sainsbury's sells regular Krüger branded chai lattes for quite a high price.

Basically the box contains 10 sachets of chai latte mix, with the twist being that it's made from green tea! This might be nothing to some people, but for me it was a revelation! I've only ever tried regular chai lattes before and didn't know it was even possible to make one with green tea.

The latte is made by German company Krüger, and the description on the box awkwardly reads: "Chai Latte Type Fresh India - Instant preparation for tea drinks, flavoured with a ginger-lemon grass taste". So basically it's a green tea latte with a lemongrass and ginger flavour.

Making it up as directed produced a milky, frothy latte with a slight tinge of green:

It tasted...interesting. It was extremely milky, and with a spicy, gingery, herby flavour. I was a bit unsure of what to think initially because of the pale green colour, but the flavour actually worked really well and I ended up loving it! The creaminess of the milk balanced out the slight sharpness of green tea, and the lemongrass and ginger flavour just worked with it perfectly. It made for a unique and tasty drink that felt really special.

Overall, this is such a unique drink that I'm kicking myself for not stocking up while it was cheap. If you happen to see these anywhere I would highly recommend giving them a try!

After a bit of online research it seems Krüger have their own UK website although there's no indication of where to buy these drinks from.

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Easter Eggs in December?! - Mini rant

Whilst in WH Smiths recently I spotted a display containing mini Easter Eggs. At first I thought I was imagining things but on taking a closer look I realized they were indeed real... I couldn't believe it! We haven't even made it to Christmas yet and I'm still debating over what presents to buy for family... how on earth am I supposed to think about Easter?! And why would I want to buy a Malteaster Bunny when the Maltesers Merryteaser Reindeer is still on shelves? Madness!

The varieties stocked were Cadbury Creme Eggs, Cadbury Caramel Eggs, Lindor eggs, Lindt Chocolate Carrot Treats and of course the Malteaster Bunny. So if you really can't wait until Xmas is over for your chocolate egg fix head on down to WH Smiths!

Personally I'll stick to nomming on mince pies and White Chocolate Orange for the time being...

Have you seen any Easter Eggs in shops yet? Do you think it's too early? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Ritter Sport Kokosmakrone (Coconut Macaroon) - Winter Kreation 2013 Review

$

A big thankyou to Monster Sweets for sending me this Ritter Sport Kokos-makrone bar to review recently! Like the Ritter Sport Caramel-Orange bar I've reviewed previously it's part of the Ritter Sport Winter Kreations 2013 range, which also includes a Caramelized Almonds variety.

Basically, if you're a fan of coconut chocolates then this is the chocolate for you! Ritter Sport's UK Website describe the bar as combining  "freshly baked coconut macaroons with the best Ritter Sport milk chocolate and crispy rice flakes". This sounded absolutely delicious and rather unique to me, especially as there's currently no other coconut macaroon filled bars on the market.

As far as coconut chocolates go, this is right up there with the Ritter Sport Kokos on the deliciousness scale! The milk chocolate is Ritters usual standard - creamy and with a good cocoa flavour, and a lot nicer than the average UK mass-produced chocolate bar. The filling, as always, is where it truly shines though: its exceptionally smooth and creamy with a subtle vanilla flavour, and melts in the mouth like butter. The coconut macaroon biscuit pieces are very crunchy and provide a good strong coconut hit. Overall the bar tasted very biscuity, yet at the same time very creamy, making it the perfect combination of creamy and crunchy textures.

Overall, this is the perfect Christmas chocolate bar (well, except for Ritter Sport's Caramel-Orange Winter Kreation, perhaps!) and I would highly recommend stocking up while they're still around! They'd make the perfect gift for fans of coconut chocolates, in fact Monster Sweets are including them in their new "Coconut Gift Box" Hamper:

The hamper is available HERE, along with a White Chocolate Gift Box and a Ritter Sport Gift Box!

RATING: 8.5 out of 10.

Price: £1.75 per 100g bar.

Lidl's Bellarom White Chocolate With Strawberry Crisp Review

Today's review is for a white chocolate bar you may never have heard of thanks to its exclusivity to Lidl. Lidl tends to get a bad rap as being a lower class supermarket, however their range of chocolates is fantastic quality and a lot better than many mainstream UK chocolate bars, as well as being cheaper!

This bar is described as "White Chocolate with Sweetened Strawberry Flavoured Pieces" and contains 28% cocoa solids plus 22% milk solids. It reminded me of Cadbury Dream with Strawberries from years ago - here's a pic from chocolatereview.co.uk. Anyone else remember it?

Opening the box revealed a fairly thick slab of chocolate with the Bellarom logo imprinted on each square. It looked very classy for a "cheap" chocolate bar!

Splitting it in half revealed lots of speckled pieces of dried strawberry embedded within - there was definitely no shortage of it!

Placing a square in my mouth I was met with a delightfully strong cream flavour. The chocolate was extremely full on with its creaminess, and all the better for of it. Compared to other white chocolates like Milkybar it tasted a lot richer, probably because it contains actual cream powder in the ingredients. The strawberry pieces made it even more luxurious and brought a lovely fresh fruitiness - it tasted like strawberries and cream in bar form! I felt very satisfied after just 2 chunks, and although the chocolate was very sweet I didn't get the "throat burn" feeling like I do with other white chocolates.

Overall, I thought this Strawberry Crisp bar was fantastic and it's one I now buy regularly from Lidl. It's an absolute bargain considering the quality, and if you're a white chocolate fan or miss the Cadbury Dream with Strawberries I would strongly recommend heading to Lidl to try a bar! They also do a fantastic fruit and nut milk chocolate, which dare I say is even better than Cadbury's Fruit & Nut (no kidding!).

RATING: 8.5 out of 10.

Price: £1.09p per 200g bar.

Costa's Gingerbread and Cream Latte Review - Christmas Menu 2013

In my bid to try all of Costa's new Christmas Menu for 2013 so far I've sampled the White Hot Chocolate and Spiced Apple drinks. I fancied trying this Gingerbread Latte next purely because I thought the mini gingerbread man on top looked really cool!

When my drink arrived it really did look cool with the cute gingerbread man perched on top of the cream...happily unaware he was about to be devoured!

Taste-wise the gingerbread man was...well, gingery and buttery - pretty much what you would expect from a gingerbread biscuit, really! The cream as always was delightful, and the latte itself had a subtle spicy ginger kick, although wasn't quite as strong in flavour as I had hoped. Still, it was a fantastic addition to an otherwise regular latte, and made this drink feel just that extra bit special.

Overall, a lovely drink - the mini gingerbread man on top is a really cool idea and is sure to bring a smile to any scrooge's face this festive season!

RATING: 7.5 out of 10.

New Mr Kipling Winter Whirls Review

Today's review is for the new Winter Whirls, a festive spinoff of Mr Kipling's Viennese Whirls. I've always been a fan of Viennese Whirls and enjoyed the different varieties they've brought out over the years - lemon, chocolate, toffee, and now even Black Forest Whirls, too. This Christmas version intrigued me more though, as it's almost like Mr Kipling have decided to re-invent the humble mince pie in the image of their Viennese Whirls!

They're described as "Winter Whirls with buttercream and mince pie flavour filling". Removing one from the pack it certainly looked like a mince pie, albeit a posh one with a layer of cream and extra pastry underneath!

Posh mince pie?
Cutting it in half revealed a thick layer of buttercream and the thinner layer of mince pie flavoured filling. It was quite sticky and jam-like.

The Whirl tasted very nice, with that distinctive crumbly, buttery texture that Viennese Whirls are known for, and the filling gave it a familiar mince pie flavour whilst the buttercream added an extra touch of indulgence...but being honest, it wasn't as exciting as it could have been. Mr Kipling could have created a viable alternative to the humble mince pie here if they'd played their cards right, but as it stands these Winter Whirls are just a nice limited edition - worth picking up a pack if you see them, but definitely not as good as a real mince pie!

RATING: 7 out of 10.

Price: £1 at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Poundland.
Suitable for vegetarians?: Yes.
Allergy Information: Contains wheat, gluten, milk. May contain nuts.

Morrisons Belgian Chocolate Turkeys with Cranberry Stuffing - Review

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... or at least, the long drawn-out sales opportunity that gives us odd limited editions such as Mint Chocolate Pringles, Mince Pie Flavour Crisps, Christmas Dinner Pot Noodles, and now these - Turkey-shaped chocolates with a cranberry truffle filling! Why bother with Christmas dinner when you can get it in chocolate form, I hear you ask?! Read on to find out...

I spotted these in Morrisons alongside some popping candy christmas cracker chocolates, but these looked much more fun. They're described as "Milk chocolates filled with a white chocolate and cranberry truffle filling" and the pack boasts them as being a "gold star product", although I'm not sure who is awarding these gold stars...Morrisons themselves perhaps? It's a misleading claim as they aren't great quality chocolates by any means.

They look cool though. Opening the pack revealed 5 turkey-shaped chocolates with a somewhat grumpy expression, almost as if they knew their fate. They were packaged in a shiny, rather religious-looking gold tray (some sort of social commentary, perhaps...?):

Since they'd probably been kept in cramped, dark conditions for the last 6 months I decided to put them out of their misery.

I cut the head off one, which didn't reveal much in the way of filling so I went for the belly instead, which exposed a thin layer of white truffle "stuffing". No sign of cranberries though!

Basically, they tasted like cheap supermarket chocolates. Nothing amazing, but not too bad either - just sugary, milky and with no real cocoa depth. The white truffle had a vague fruity flavour and tasted like the filling in Jammy Dodger's - sweet and pleasant, but in an artificial kind of way.

Overall, although these are distinctively cheap chocolates despite Morrisons' claims of them being "gold star", they're definitely a bit of fun and a nice novelty product. I wouldn't buy them again personally but I'm sure kids will enjoy them.

RATING: 6 out of 10.

Price: £2 per pack or 2 packs for £3 (includes Christmas Cracker Chocolates).

Caffè Nero Roasted Chestnut Latte Review

When I saw this new Roasted Chestnut Latte advertised in Caffè Nero recently I just had to give it a try. As much as I've been enjoying Costa's 2013 Christmas Menu recently, they don't do anything quite as quirky as this! The description on Caffè Nero's website reads:
"The new Roasted Chestnut latte will be sure to bring you joy this festive season. The unique flavour of our roasted chestnut syrup has been developed exclusively for our customers by the mixologists at Monin. It is then blended with our signature espresso, topped with warm milk and a dash of foam. Finally, it is served with a Gianduja chocolate on the side, for an extra slice of heaven".

Unfortunately mine didn't come with the gianduja chocolate as promised but it was nicely presented and otherwise as described. It had a lovely chestnut flavour - nutty yet sweet, and the flavour complimented the milky latte perfectly. It tasted very comforting, and made for a perfect festive drink. I was actually surprised by how realistically it captured the flavour of chestnut considering it's made from syrup - those guys at Monin really know their stuff!

I'll definitely be buying these again throughout the festive season and hope they stick around well into January. Bravo Caffè Nero - you've matched Costa's Christmas efforts with just one drink here! I can't wait to see what other delights await us in future...

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Nestlé Nesquik Chocolate Wafer Bar

Whilst in a local Turkish store recently I spotted this Nesquik wafer bar. I'd never seen it before and it wasn't long after I bought it that Marcus posted a new "10 Foreign Chocolate Bars 003" video which included this amongst them that I realized it was anything special! So in honour of his video I decided to pull it out of the review cupboard and give it a try...

Opening the wrapper it looked like a pretty regular puffed wafer bar coated in milk chocolate, but had a stronger, more pleasant chocolatey smell than the average Nestlé chocolate bar. I could tell this was going to be a bit more special as it had that distinctive, sweet "Nesquik" aroma, if there is such a thing!

Splitting it in half revealed a regular puffed wafer with a pale cream filling. Biting into it I was met with the expected sweetness as well as a nice milky cream, which I would say recreated the flavour of Nesquik cereal fairly accurately. It was a very pleasant wafer and if you're a fan of Nesquik you're sure to enjoy this a lot. It's definitely aimed at children and if you like chocolate sweet and milky then this is for you! Overall, a rather tasty wafer bar that surprised me by just how nice it was.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
