New! Cadbury Creme Egg Biscuits Review

$

0

I've been on the hunt for these new Creme Egg biscuits for a while now. I usually manage to spot new products in shops immediately but these proved to be quite illusive here up North! Luckily I finally found a pack in Tesco this week for a reasonable £1.

There's 6 biscuits per pack which is a decent amount for the price. They're made by Burtons Biscuits under license from Cadbury (who produce famous biscuits such as Wagon Wheels, Jammie Dodgers, Maryland Cookies etc), and look rather similar to other biscuits in this range such as the Cadbury Caramel and Turkish Delight biscuits.

The difference being of course that they contain a layer of the famous gooey fondant that is Creme Egg! Here it is in all its gooey glory:

Taste-wise they were good...almost too good. They surprised me by just how much they managed to recreate the classic creme egg flavour - that super-sweet vanilla hinted fondant that we all know and love! The biscuit base brought a nice chocolatey crunch and of course the chocolate coating topped it all off nicely, making these a rather moreish snack. Needless to say it wasn't long before I ate all 6 biscuits, some of which I dunked in coffee to make them super-duper tasty!

Overall, these are a fantastic novelty Easter product and certainly didn't disappoint on the creme egg front. If you're a fan of Cadbury Creme Eggs you definitely have to try these out!

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Mister Choc Chocolate Coated Sunflower Seeds (Lidl) - Quick Review

When I discovered these chocolate coated sunflower seeds in Lidl I was very excited, probably more than anyone should be about sunflower seeds. Because I've never tasted chocolate coated sunflower seeds before, ever! They sounded like the perfect snack...

They were in a loose plastic bag with a seal around it, making them very easy to pour into your hand and munch loads at once. And that's exactly what I did!

They were extremely moreish. They were toasted and crunchy, with a lovely nutty flavour that went well with the milk chocolate. The chocolate itself was creamy and sweet, and balanced out the savoury flavour of the seeds perfectly.

Overall these were a surprisingly delicious snack and made a nice change from chocolate coated nuts or raisins. I would highly recommend giving them a try!

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Price: They were around 99p. Unfortunately I'm not sure if Lidl still stock them...if anyone has seen them recently please let me know in the comments!

Tesco Cracked Black Pepper Bites - Guest Review by "Ze Dan"

$

Today's post is a guest review by a talented friend, who wishes only to be known as the mysterious "Ze Dan"...enjoy!

Picture it: poor, pitiful...pouty. Between the winds howling and the shopping centre’s endless brain-blasting of Katy Bieb-erry, our hero finds himself in dire need of lunchy sustenance.

Crisps! Yes. That’ll do it. Crisps will make it all go away. Their crunchy goodness & salty shenanigans have a way of easing the soul. As in: I eat them, remember I have something called ethics, thereby preventing a seemingly inevitable mass axe Biebicide. Who says crisp cravings are a bad thing?

So in search of both lunch & a cure for the world’s ills, I grabbed the closest bag of generic crispyshizzles from Tesco & fled to the nearest Costa cave to guzzle my troubles away.

Except, of course, they weren’t *actually* crisps. They were crusty Hippo droppings, lovingly disguised as some weird food capsule:

And sadly, not unlike Cliff Richard’s eerie 634th annual (don’t ask me how I alone know the true figure...) calendar edition, the packing is an eternally grinning, funless facade... luring you into an unsuspecting world of painful monstrosities inside!

Let me be clear about this: it’s not so much the fact that it tasted like regurgitated hippy breast milk laced with dried verruca acid, it’s more the fact that I feel lied to about it. You know? Had I known I was about to ingest the crisp equivalent of toad farts, I might have avoided it. Apparently in this day & age of recession, OneDirection & cutbacks...even Tesco can no longer afford to bring us normal crisps! Won’t somebody think of the children?!

As it is, these do little to satiate hunger and nothing to abate crisp cravings. Let the killing spree begin!

RATING: 3 out of 10.

Stay tuned for more guest reviews from "Ze Dan" in future! - Kev.

Vimto Candyfloss Review

$

This Vimto Candyfloss has quite an amusing story behind it - it may be responsible for getting some innocent piglets hooked on sugar!

I bought it last year when I visited an arboretum (posh word for botanical gardens) in Southampton. They had some piglets there that were so cute I just had to give them something, but all I had was this tub of Vimto Candyfloss. I thought the piggies might appreciate the sugar boost so I gave them a few pieces...and they went CRAZY for it! Afterwards they started snuffling around manically, looking for more. I've since heard they've been "acting a bit funny" when fed. Oh dear - seems like I made sugar addicts out of them! If you ever happen to eat Vimto-flavoured bacon, blame me!

Luckily the candyfloss didn't send me as crazy as the piggies...I hated the stuff. When I removed the lid it looked like a solid clump of purple foam - nothing like the soft fluffy candyfloss you get at the fairground! It had a strong, artificial fruit smell that was overpowering and not very pleasant. It did smell of Vimto, but a stale, chemically version of Vimto.

It tasted pretty bad; overly sweet - which is to be expected from candyfloss - but also overpoweringly artificial and kind of stale. I could only stomach a small piece, which is unusual for me since I'll usually eat anything sweet!

Overall, I wasn't a fan of this Vimto Candyfloss, but nevertheless I do think it's great that Vimto are branching out into confectionery. Hopefully their other sweets (Bonbons etc) are much nicer!

Co-Yo Dairy Free Coconut Milk Yoghurt Review

$

I'd been searching for this CoYo Dairy Free yogurt for ages last year - I'm a big fan of coconut milk products for their health benefits - but unfortunately it proved rather elusive to track down! Luckily since then it has appeared in a lot of organic and whole food stores, which can only be a good thing.

In short, this yogurt is simply delicious! It tastes just as good as regular cow's milk yogurt, in fact I would say it surpasses it since it doesn't have that strong acidic taste. It's much creamier thanks to the coconut milk and tastes a lot more satisfying. I'm sure it would be perfect with cereal or for mixing with fruit, and of course it's suitable for anyone with a dairy allergy. It's sweetened with xylitol which makes it sugar-free, plus it contains probiotics as well as being vegan, nut-free and gluten-free. Thank goodness it's not deliciousness-free!

Overall, CoYo gets a big thumbs up from me and I would highly recommend it to anyone sensitive to dairy or who wants something that is healthy but delicious. I hope to see CoYo yogurts in major supermarkets in the future!

E Wedel Ptasie Mleczko (Polish Chocolate Marshmallow Fingers)

Wedel Ptasie Mleczko

Just a quick review for these "Ptasie Mleczko" today...they're made by Polish company E Wedel and are basically two marshmallow fingers coated in milk chocolate. They come in a twin-pack and remind me of those 2-finger Kitkats you get in multipacks.

Wedel Ptasie Mleczko

According to Wikipedia they are very well-known in Poland and Wedel have exclusive rights to the name. The name means "birds milk" (hence the bird image on the wrapper) and is attributed to old Slavic folk tales, where a beautiful princess tests the resourcefulness of her man by sending him into the wilderness to bring back the one fantastical luxury she does not have: bird's milk (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptasie_mleczko). Sounds like these have quite an interesting history!

Each finger is quite thick with a thin coating of milk chocolate, and when I cut into one I found it rather soft and squidgy.

Wedel Ptasie Mleczko

The marshmallow tasted pleasant enough, and had a lovely creamy vanilla undertone, but the texture was a bit "eggy" and spoiled the overall experience for me. The milk chocolate coating was pleasant and of good quality.

Wedel Ptasie Mleczko

Overall, despite the odd texture I still thought these were rather tasty and made a nice change from a Kitkat with a cup of coffee. If you happen to see these in a Polish store they're definitely worth a try!

Perhaps some of my Polish readers can comment on these - are you a fan? Are they popular in Poland? Let me know in the comments! :)

RATING: 7 out of 10.

New! Cadbury Dairy Milk with Ritz Crackers & LU Biscuits Review

cadbury dairy milk with ritz crackers and lu sweet biscuits

Last year I reviewed the Milka with TUC Crackers and LU Cookies bars, and rather enjoyed them. Since Mondelez are now bringing most of their Milka variations to the UK under the Dairy Milk brand (Oreo, D'aim, etc) it didn't surprise me much when they announced the launch of these.

Unlike the Milka versions these only come in small 35g bars, each containing 4 squares of Dairy Milk embedded with either LU biscuits or Ritz crackers. Presumably Mondelez went for Ritz rather than TUC crackers as they're more popular in the UK.

Dairy Milk with Ritz Crackers:
cadbury dairy milk with ritz crackers
Dairy Milk Ritz
Described as "Milk chocolate with 8 salted crackers", this 4-square bar contains a mini Ritz cracker on both sides of each square. The chocolate is pure Dairy Milk so of course it tastes delicious and creamy - I'm sure I needn't describe it! Combined with the Ritz crackers it creates a moreish synergy - savoury, salty, creamy and sweet all rolled into one. It works perhaps even better than Milka with TUC Crackers as the Dairy Milk is creamier and somehow balances out the overall flavour. This is a very moreish bar indeed, it's just a shame it's so small!

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Dairy Milk with LU Sweet Biscuits:
cadbury dairy milk with lu sweet biscuits
Dairy Milk LU
Described as "Milk chocolate with 8 biscuits", this is perhaps the safer option of the two as it contains mini sweet LU biscuits - no salt here! They work better with the chocolate than the Ritz crackers and give a malty, vanilla-hinted flavour which is very delicious. This bar reminded me a little of Dairy Milk with Shortcake Biscuit that was available many years ago, and if you were a fan of that bar you'll surely enjoy this!

Dairy Milk LU
RATING: 8 out of 10.

Overall, these are two delicious bars that no doubt many people will enjoy. They're as good, if not better than the Milka versions, but will they catch on with the Great British Public? That's the real question, and I'll be very interested to see how long they stick around.

If you've tried these please let me know your thoughts in the comments! Also I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried the Milka versions - how do you think these compare?

rowntree's randoms sweet n sour

Another year, another product launch from Rowntree's Randoms. Last year they did Squidgy Speak and Rip 'Ems, and even a special Phantom Mix for Halloween... now they're doing this Sweet N Sour version of their sweets that are oh-so-popular with the youth.

These basically do what they say on the tin: they're randomly shaped jelly and foam sweets in either sour or sweet flavours, so it's like they took regular Rowntree's Randoms and mixed some sour sweets among them.

The result is rather nice. The sour Random's are very fruity with a pleasant sour tang, not too overpowering or artificial. There's a nice variety of shapes, with the classic ice cream cone as well as love hearts, a foam snowman, smiley faces, and even a wonka-style tophat.

rowntree's randoms sweet n sour

Overall, nothing majorly new from Rowntree's Randoms here, but these are still some tasty sweets which will no doubt be very popular with kids thanks to the branding.

Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Wafer Bars! - Blast From The Past

Unfortunately today's post isn't a review as I can't review the iconic Banjo chocolate wafer bar...as it no longer exists! That's because Mars Foods shamefully and selfishly stopped production of this fantastic bar in the early 1980's, leaving its fans heartbroken and a generation deprived of its awesomeness!

Ok... I will admit I haven't actually tasted a Banjo bar, but I'm assured they were fantastic and far better than any other wafer bar on the market. Their unique selling point was their crispy wafers with a layer of chopped peanuts on top. There was also a toasted coconut version!:

It sounds like a unique combination and not something you would find on shelves today. The only similar bar I can think of is Kinder Bueno, which is a bit of a different proposition altogether. It's about time Mars brought a bar like this onto the market again since they rarely do anything other than Galaxy variations these days, or Mars bars without the nougat. Give us something we really want Mars!

So today's post is a call to my followers and fellow snacks fans - please sign the the Bring Back Banjo Petition to help bring back the one and only Banjo Bar and usher in a new era of snacking!

New! Cadbury Wispa Gold Hot Chocolate Review

cadbury wispa gold hot chocolate

I was very excited when Wispa launched their new hot chocolate drink last year - the first time the Wispa brand has been extended into drinks. In my review I commented that they should also do a Wispa Gold version, and low and behold now they have! It seemed like a no-brainer really, since Wispa Gold is almost as iconic as the original Wispa bar itself.

I picked up a 27g sachet at Asda but I've seen the jar version in a few shops too, and Tesco stock both. It's described as "Hot frothy caramel choccy", and the instructions are to pour hot water onto the powder and "stir to release the bubbles". And that's exactly what I did!

As I poured on the hot water the powder began to crackle and fizz slightly - almost like Rice Krispies - and became very bubbly until it resembled the interior of a Wispa bar! I don't know what monstrous chemicals they've put in it to produce such frothiness but it's rather impressive and certainly lives up to the Wispa name.

cadbury wispa gold hot chocolate

It tasted lovely - very sweet and chocolatey with a strong caramel flavour, and of course very bubbly and creamy. It had an unmistakable "Cadbury" chocolate taste, which I'm sure everyone is familiar with. And aside from the sweet caramel flavour, that was the defining element - the unmistakable and comforting taste of Cadbury chocolate. It elevates what might otherwise be a nice-tasting hot chocolate to something extra special.

Overall, this is a lovely drink that definitely does justice to the iconic Wispa Gold. I think it'd go particularly nicely with an actual bar of Wispa Gold; I imagine it would taste amazing dipped in the hot chocolate - a perfect combination!

I reckon they should do a Wispa Mint version next - it just makes logical sense. But then they would have to bring back the Wispa Mint bar too!

Cherizena Banoffee Pie & Almond Amaretto Flavour Coffees Review

$

0

Sometimes, I get cynical about new products and say so on my Twitter account. That's what happened when I heard about this new Banoffee Pie flavour coffee from Cherizena recently. I'm so used to flavoured coffees tasting artificial and chemically that I've become unimpressed with the flavoured coffee market.

Cherizena saw my tweet though and offered to send some samples of their coffee to prove me wrong, and proven wrong I was! These Cherizena coffees are delicious and actually do their respective flavours justice.

The Banoffee Pie variety tasted realistically of cream, bananas and caramel all rolled into one, without any nasty chemical taste, and the flavour didn't feel like an afterthought either - it was forefront and didn't play second fiddle to the strong taste of coffee. It was a tasty synergy and made for a lovely experience, and I felt like I was drinking more than just flavoured coffee. Cherizena, you proved me wrong - your banoffee pie flavour coffee is lovely, and I take back what I said on Twitter!

RATING: 9 out of 10.

The Almond Amaretto flavour was also very delicious with a lovely amaretto almond flavour, which again like the banoffee pie variety didn't play second fiddle to the strong taste of coffee. It went with it very well, providing a lovely synergy of flavours, tasting realistic and not at all chemically.

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Overall, these two coffees from Cherizena were lovely and prove that flavoured coffee isn't always a gimmick and can actually taste of what it's supposed to! If you're a fan of flavoured coffees or just fed up with ones that promise a lot but don't deliver, I highly recommend giving these a try!

Note: I used Aroy-D coconut milk with these coffees as I'm becoming a big convert to using it instead of cow's milk, and it made for a lovely rich coffee, perhaps even better than with regular milk!

Carte D'or Gelateria Caffe Latte Ice Cream:

There were a few other flavours in the range but I only got a pic of the Eton Mess and this Caffe Latte variety.

Also new in the range is this Mississippi Mud Pie variety! I'm sure I saw a couple more new flavours too.

Nestlé Toffee Crisp Cereal:

This new Toffee Crisp Cereal from Nestlé is aimed at adults, because apparently there are currently no chocolate cereals specifically targeting those over 35.

Dove Crispy Rice Bar Review (China)

$

0

Today's review is thanks to a reader from China who sent me a snacks package last year. I must sincerely apologize to her for taking so long to review it; I've had so many snacks in the archives and so little time it somehow ended up being neglected.

She sent me a fantastic snacks package but the one which stood out most to me was this Dove Crispy bar. Dove is another name for the famous Galaxy brand that we get here in the UK - it seems that elsewhere in the world (including the US) it's called Dove, but only here in the UK it's called Galaxy for some odd reason!

Unfortunately this bar suffered heat damage during postage and so had a rather "bloomed" and dusty appearance, but luckily it still tasted okay!

It tasted slightly different to the Galaxy chocolate we get here in the UK - it was a little richer and less milky. The crispy rice pieces were a nice addition and gave the chocolate a welcome crunch, although there weren't enough of them to make it worthwhile. It reminded me a little of Nestlé Crunch bars but with less crisped rice.

Overall, this is an interesting bar and it would be a nice addition to the UK Galaxy range, but only if it had more crisped rice added!

RATING: 7 out of 10.

Cocoa Hernando Discovers Himalaya - Milk Chocolate with Pink Diamond Salt

$

I was recently sent this bar of Cocoa Hernando Discovers Himalaya chocolate, described as "Milk chocolate with Pink Diamond Salt" and was both a little excited and nervous to try it. I've tried plenty of salted caramel chocolate bars in my time but not many that contain salt in the actual chocolate, so I wasn't quite sure how it would work in practice.

To my surprise it actually worked rather well! The chocolate tasted extremely rich and had a strong woody cocoa flavour...then the salt hits you! It tastes subtle and actually rather moreish. You can tell this is pink himalayan salt rather than any old salt, it has the subtle flavour down to a tee. I shared this with a friend who said "you can definitely taste the pink". I'm not sure how one can actually taste colours, but I'll go with it!

Overall, a tasty and good quality chocolate bar that is surprisingly moreish - I would recommend Cocoa Hernando to those who like high quality chocolate with a unique edge. Their signature India bar sounds particularly nice!

RATING: 9 out of 10.

Thorntons Special Toffee Slabs: Chocolate Brownie & Tutti Frutti Review

Thorntons Special Toffee Chocolate Brownie Slab:

I was due to review this before Christmas but unfortunately got sidetracked. I was sent it along with the Apple Crumble Slab I reviewed previously, and it was a very delicious chocolatey toffee with plenty of crunchy biscuit pieces embedded within. I wouldn't call them brownies exactly - they were more like bourbon biscuits, but they worked really well with the chocolate toffee and tasted delicious. This is definitely a slab for toffee lovers! It also appears to be gluten-free since the biscuit is made from a mixture of gluten-free flours. 8 out of 10.

Thorntons Special Toffee Tutti Frutti Slab:

I was sent this along with the Apple Crumble and Chocolate Brownie Slabs, and it was hands down my favourite of the three! I loved the citrusy pineapple flavoured toffee and the tutti frutti fudge pieces embedded within...it was an absolutely moreish toffee that kept me constantly coming back for more! I would highly recommend this - kids will love it! 9 out of 10.

Thorntons Special Toffee Slabs are available from their website or in stores.

Kev's Pick & Mix! - Seabrooks Curry Crisps, Montezuma's Great British Pudding Bars, Hello Kitty Milkshake...

Welcome to another edition of Kev's Pick & Mix: an assortment of mini snack reviews! All these snacks have been in my archive for a long time now...too long in fact, so I thought it about time I gave them the review treatment! Do let me know if you've tried any of these particular snacks via the comments...

Seabrooks Chicken Karahi Curry Crisps Limited Edition:

These Chicken Karahi Curry Crisps were developed by Seabrooks exclusively with Akbar's restaurants and available as a limited edition last year. They were tasty, although nothing groundbreaking as far as curry flavoured crisps go. 6 out of 10.

Marks & Spencer Golden Honeycomb Chocolate Crunch:

I bought these along with the Snow Ball Crunch popcorn I reviewed last Christmas, and was very disappointed. When paying good money for M&S goods I expect top-notch quality, but unfortunately these were sickly sweet and very bog-standard as far as honeycomb and chocolate goes. Give me a Cadbury's Crunchie any day! 6 out of 10.

Morrisons Signature Caramel & Raspberry White Chocolate Bar:

I was very excited to find this new chocolate amongst Morrisons revamped "Signature" range last year, but it was very disappointing. The white chocolate tasted cheap and overly sweet, whilst the caramel tasted like crunchy brown sugar and the raspberry was sickly. Overall the combination was too sweet and sickly and didn't work. I had to throw most of it away which is very unlike me! 5 out of 10.

Amadeo Solo Banana Filled Milk Chocolate:

After reading about this bar on Grocery Gems I just had to seek it out, but it eluded me for quite some time. I eventually found a bar but was a little disappointed with the cheap, synthetic flavour of the banana filling. It was very strong but also quite artificial and not to my liking at all. 4 out of 10.

Montezuma's Great British Summer Pudding Bar:

When I found some Monetzuma's bars reduced in a local organic store I couldn't resist buying a few, especially as they were from their Great British range. I had high hopes since Monetzum'as are known for quality chocolate. Alas, I was very disappointed! Both bars tasted nothing like the puddings they were named after, which is kind of to be expected I guess, but worse than that this Summer Pudding variety contained very little dried fruit and it added little flavour to the bar. The chocolate was neither here nor there quality-wise, which surprised me. Overall, I was extremely disappointed. 5 out of 10.

Monetzuma's Great British Treacle Tart Pudding Bar:

This treacle tart pudding bar was equally as disappointing as the Summer Fruit Pudding Bar. It contained toffee and hazelnut nibs to provide the treacle tart flavour, but just ended up tasting a bit weird rather than of toffee. I wasn't impressed - they should have just added some real treacle sauce in the bar. 5 out of 10.

Schmerling's of Switzerland Rosemarie Harmony Praline Filled White Chocolate:

I spotted this in the imported foods section at Tesco and couldn't resist giving it a try since I'm a fan of both white chocolate and praline...the two together sounded heavenly! The bar was a bit pricey at £2.45 for 100g and I'm not sure it was really worth it - it tasted nice enough, the white chocolate was very creamy and the praline tasted smooth and nutty, and both combined made a lovely synergy. But it wasn't all that special, distinctive or great quality either. For a more comprehensive review of this bar check out Something To Look Forward To. 6 out of 10.

Hello Kitty Strawberry Milkshake:

One day I fancied making a "bubble tea" version of strawberry milkshake, so bought this Hello Kitty strawberry milkshake from Discount UK. I'm not fussed on the Hello Kitty product trend and only really bought it because it was cheap and sounded similar to Nesquik. Taste-wise, it was pleasant enough but a little overly sweet and nowhere near as good as real strawberry Nesquik. It made for a decent base for my bubble milkshake though! 6 out of 10.

Walkers' Nonsuch Creamy Toffee Banana Split Eclair:

I picked up this toffee from Home Bargains for something like 20p; I really couldn't day no at such a cheap price. I'd never tried Walker's toffee before despite always seeing it in shops for years. It sounded delicious and indeed it was! Biting into it, it was kind of crunchy initially but then revealed a lovely creamy banana white chocolate filling. I thoroughly enjoyed it! 8 out of 10.

Manija Almond Bar:

I found this chocolate bar in my local Czech/Polish import store and assumed it was some kind of Snickers ripoff. It's made by Kraft Foods and contains a layer of nougat with caramel and almonds, and certainly looked very similar to a Snickers. I'm not sure of the country of origin. It tasted rather nice, although very sweet and not quite as good as a Snickers. Still it was pretty good snack for 49p! 7 out of 10.

Nestlé Orion Margot Rum (Rozikami) and Mango (Manga):

When I first started this blog I reviewed the Orion Magot Artemis Bar and didn't like it much at all, so I was hesitant to try these limited edition rum and mango varieties. However in a fit of new snacks excitement I decided to just go for it since they were only about 49p each... but wish I hadn't bothered! They both tasted artificial, stale and unpleasant and I still don't understand why they are popular. 4 out of 10.

Nestlé Orion Nugeta Peanut Chocolate Spread:

I found this Orion Nugeta in the same import store and it's basically a peanut chocolate spread - kind of like a peanut version of Nutella! I was very excited to try it but unfortunately it tasted nowhere near as good as Nutella. It was milkier and with added fillers, and the peanut flavour was rather weak. 6 out of 10.

Ülker Ҫikolata Pistachio Milk Chocolate Bar  (Turkish):

I found this in a local Turkish store and being a fan of pistachios thought I would give it a try. The chocolate tasted tasted nice enough but unfortunately the pistachios weren't very strong in flavour and so didn't add much to the bar. 5 out of 10.

Klover Lys Kokesjokolade:

I was convinced into buying this "Kokosjokolade" (try saying that when you're drunk!) by a market trader who claimed it was "as good as Dairy Milk". For a mere 39p I couldn't say no and took a bar with me to Costa. As expected it turned out I'd been told nonsense - this was merely a cheap chocolate bar similar in quality to Sainsbury's Basics or Tesco Value milk chocolate! To be fair it tasted a tad creamier and nicer than those bars, but it was still decidedly "cheap". 5 out of 10.

Wonka Double Dipped Nerds Lemonade, Wild Cherry, Apple & Watermelon:

I found these Double Dipped Nerds in my local Tesco Express during a late-night snacks binge...(what is it with Tesco Express selling American sweets? They're hardly a neccesity like milk and bread to have on every street corner...does anyone else find this odd?) Anyway I thought I'd give them a try as I hadn't eaten Nerds since I was a kid. They were all pleasant enough, but very sweet and artificial-tasting; reminding me why I stopped eating Nerds in the first place! 5 out of 10.

Chupa Chups Melody Pops Strawberry:

I also bought this Melody Pops lolly during my snacks binge, just for nostalgia reasons really! It tasted pretty much as I remember - very sweet and that's about all, but of course the real fun was whistling on it! Sadly it didn't last for long once I'd crunched into it. This is a nice novelty but best left in the past I think! 6 out of 10.

Fruittella Crunchies:

I spotted these in the kiddies section in Asda and thought I'd give them a try. They looked a bit like a crunchy Skittles style sweet and that's pretty much what they were! They tasted almost identical to Skittles but larger and sweeter, and of course inferior. They were nice enough but there's much better sweets out there. 6 out of 10.

Fruittella UFO's:

I also bought these Fruittella UFO's...just for fun. Like the Fruittella Crunchies these also turned out to be identical in taste and texture to Skittles, but much inferior. I suppose the theme is fun and they're aimed at kids so I shouldn't grumble too much! 6 out of 10.

Well, that's it for this today's Pick & Mix! I hope you've all enjoyed this rundown of mini snacks reviews...stay tuned for more in future!

Poppets Strawberry Milkshake & Reese's Pieces - Double Review!

Whew...life has been hectic lately and I've had barely any time for blog reviews! I thought it about time I crack down and do some though since my friend Bring Back Banjo Bar kindly sent me some snacks recently! Here are a few from the haul she sent me...

Paynes Poppets Strawberry Milkshake:

First up are these strawberry milkshake flavour poppets from Paynes confectionery. I always loved Poppets as a kid, especially the raisin, toffee and orange varieties...so was excited to try these! They were nice enough but extremely sweet and sugary, and without much chocolate flavour. They're ok as a quick snack but there's better strawberry flavoured chocolates out there. 6 out of 10.

Reese's Pieces:

Next up are Reese's Pieces. I first tried these years ago and remember thinking how rubbish they were, considering they're meant to be like a Reese's version of Smarties or M&M's. They're so bland and pointless and only taste mildly of peanut butter....and they consist mostly of sugar more than anything else. Why do people buy them? It baffles me. They don't do justice to the awesome Resse's peanut butter cups at all! I would recommend avoiding these. 4 out of 10.

A big thank you to Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Bar for sending me these snacks, do stay tuned for more reviews of the stuff she sent me soon! Please also check out her PETITION to bring back the Banjo Wafer Bar as well as Like her Facebook Page - every little helps!

Meine Milka: Milchcreme & Honig (Milk Cream and Honey) Bar Review

meine milka milchcreme and honig

Whilst browsing Farm Foods (of all places!) recently I came across this bar of "Meine Milka - Milchcreme and Honig". It's described as "NEU - nur fur kurze zeit", which roughly translates from German as "New, only for a limited time". I'm not sure if it's old stock from last year or intended for this year in the German market but was still a good 5 months in date, and for only 50p I really couldn't say no!

meine milka milchcreme and honig

The filling is of course milk cream and honey, and on opening the wrapper I was met with a strong sweet honey aroma. The chocolate had a distinctive "European" smell with a slight hint of hazelnut.

meine milka milchcreme and honig

Cutting it in half revealed the cream centre with a portion of honey on top of each block. It was quite sticky and more of a sauce rather than real honey - presumably it'd been mixed with some kind of sugar syrup.

Taste-wise the bar was very lovely - extremely creamy and sweet thanks to the layer of milk cream, and with a strong sweet honey flavour from the honey filling. The chocolate was standard Milka chocolate; very creamy and with a slight flavour of hazelnut.

Overall, this is a nice curiosity and definitely worth a try if you have a Farm Foods nearby, but it's not worth going out of your way for.

New! UK Skittles Wild Berry Review

When I heard these Wild Berry flavour Skittles were being launched in the UK I was very excited to try them, especially as I remembered they were also available in the early 2000's in some kind of trial format. I ate them regularly in medium-sized bags at the time and became rather addicted; once they disappeared I thought they were gone for good!

Luckily they've now been launched in the UK on a permanent basis - hurrah! The flavours consist of Raspberry, Strawberry, Wild Cherry, Berry Punch & Melon Berry.

Taste-wise they were all fantastic, extremely fruity and chewy and with a perfect mixture of berry flavours. I loved the cherry and melon (is melon even a berry?!) flavours the most but all of them made for a lovely mix. Overall, a great product that I hope will stick around this time!
