Plamil So Free Organic White Chocolate Alternative

so free vegan chocolate

A mahoosive thankyou to Plamil Foods, who recently sent me a box of their Dairy Free, Organic, Gluten Free and Vegan-friendly chocolate range to review recently! It was like a gift from the Gods considering I had been avoiding the dairy-filled chocolates recently.

It's tricky finding decent dairy free alternatives in shops; there's the trusty dark chocolates from Lindt and G&B of course but sometimes you want something a bit more mellow. Thankfully Plamil have catered for all with their range - from White Chocolate to Milk Chocolate alternatives, to the more darker end of the cocoa spectrum. I thought I'd start with the White Chocolate Alternative first, since it's one of the most difficult products to find a Dairy Free version of.

so free vegan white chocolate

Billed as Organic and containing 48% cocoa this sounded rather special indeed - it consists of a blend of cocoa butter, sugar and rice in place of milk.

plamil so free white chocolate

Do forgive the broken appearance of the bar, I think in my excitement I may have dropped it - it didn't arrive that way, it was well wrapped in the post! The slab has a wavy pattern on it as well as the Plamil logo and another logo near the bottom of the bar, which appears to be birds?

plamil so free dairy free white chocolate

I broke off a piece and took a bite. Mmmm, very melt in the mouth! Certainly different to the white chocolate anyone might be used to - the taste is more focused on the cocoa butter and melt in the mouth texture rather than the overly sweet milkiness you get with "dairy" white chocolates. It took some getting used to, especially since I haven't really tried anything like this before (with the exception of the fab Solkiki Toasted Coconut White which I can no longer find - booo!). But as I chewed on it it really grew on me, it has a comforting sweet vanilla hinted flavour that creeps up on you. It's even better with a cup of coffee - you can dip it in and it gets all melty and lovely. Yum!

Overall, for an alternative to white chocolate this has to be one of the better quality options I've tried. It's better than the supermarket own brands and feels more premium. If you're dairy free or vegan and miss white chocolate - this one is a must-try!

Holdsworth Fiery Stem Ginger Dark Chocolates

Holdsworths Chocolates Fiery Dark Chocolate Gingers

A huge thankyou to the lovely Holdsworths Chocolates for today's review; they kindly sent me some of their delicious handmade chocolate range recently including milk and dark varieties. I thought I'd start with the "Fiery Stem Ginger enrobed in Dark Chocolate" first since I'd been avoiding dairy for a while - these contain no dairy and are suitable for vegans. Described as "The finest crystallised stem ginger enrobed in dark chocolate - a spicy exotic treat coupled with the secret powers of ginger", they are available direct from Holdsworths website or from department stores like John Lewis. I believe Waitrose also stock some of their range.

So what sets these apart from other chocolate gingers? Are they worth going out of your way for?

Holdsworths Chocolates Fiery Dark Chocolate Gingers

Firstly I have to say I do love the pack design, it looks premium and makes the chocolates feel extra special indeed. These would definitely make a lovely gift, whether for a loved one or all to yourself! The gingers are wrapped in a plastic inner bag, which I carefully opened.

Holdsworths Chocolates Fiery Dark Chocolate Gingers

Right away I could tell these were better quality than your average chocolate gingers; the chocolate actually smells like a good quality dark chocolate. I cut one of them open (above) so you get an idea of the ratio of chocolate to ginger.

Taking a bite, I was actually surprised how good these tasted! I usually think of chocolate gingers as an overly sweet snack only suitable at Christmastime, but these proved me very wrong, the ginger tastes warm and spicy but isn't overly sugary like most. It's just sweet enough to be moreish, and paired with the flavoursome dark chocolate it's the perfect balance. A few of these make for a very satisfying and indulgent little snack! And they're warming on a cold, wet day (which we've been having a lot of lately it seems), so you can eat them "for medicinal purposes" if you need an excuse to indluge ;)

As my introduction to Holdsworths Chocolates I have to say I was very impressed with these. The quality is excellent and they taste superb. Are they worth the extra money compared to cheaper brands? Yes, definitely! They're also worth going out of your way for - not only are you supporting a smaller local business, but you will get more enjoyment from these than a cheaper version. Highly recommended especially if you're dairy-free or vegan and need some chocolate variation!

Available from http://www.holdsworthchocolates.co.uk, as well as John Lewis.

Ingredients: Dark chocolate 55% (cocoa mass, cocoa butter, emulsifier soya lecithin, natural vanilla), Ginger 45% (sugar, preservative sulphur dioxide). Cocoa solids 60% minimum.

Cadbury Heroes Party Cupcakes

A Spotted In Shops focused on cakes and biscuits today, since there are so many new treats in shops lately!

First up is the rather special Cadbury Heroes Party Cupcakes Selection. Now even though this is called Cadbury Heroes, the cupcakes only feature Cadbury Caramel, Cadbury Crunchie and Cadbury Flake. That's hardly "Heroes", Cadbury! Still these cupcakes with their caramel and chocolate buttercreams do sound pretty scrumptious. Spotted in Tesco.

Cadbury Rocky Road Mud Cake:
Cadbury Rocky Road Mud Cake

A new "gluten free" Mud Cake from Cadbury, made with Cadbury Chocolate that can be found in the Free From frozen section at Tesco. Although this is gluten free, it's made from wheat starch that has had the gluten removed...so if you're super sensitive to wheat I would advise caution with this. Otherwise, it sounds like a tasty cake indeed!

Galaxy Chocolate Mousse Cake:
Galaxy Chocolate Mousse Cake

A delicious new cake from Mars, this one features a biscuit base and layers of chocolate mousse, topped with Galaxy chocolate buttons. Yummo! Spotted at Tesco.

Mars Mud Pie:

Swizzels Loadsa Sweets Party Cake:

This caught my eye purely due to all the sweets on top - what a sugar rush! Not only does it have gummy fried eggs, but Squashies sweets and Rainbow Drops. Spotted in Tesco.

Asda Unicorn Cake:

Not to be outdone by Tesco, Asda are doing their own Unicorn Cake that looks a lot nicer (I did have a photo of the Tesco version but seem to have lost it - it's on my Instagram page somewhere). Apparently it serves 18...yeah right, maybe 18 mice!

Jammie Dodgers Lemon Twist Limited Edition:
Jammie Dodgers Lemon Twist Limited Edition

I'm not sure what's new about this limited edition - Jammie Dodgers have done a lemon variety before as Lively Lemon, so I'm guessing it's a rehash. If anyone knows do leave a comment! Spotted in Tesco.

So in Easter Egg form it makes the perfect treat for anyone wiahing to stick to a sugar free diet over the Easter period! Not only is it made with 100% cocoa chocolate, the shell contains cocoa nibs and there's a sachet of 100% Dark Chocolate buttons with it too.

Montezuma's Absolute Black Easter Egg with Cocoa Nibs & Buttons

The egg was silver foil wrapped, a nice touch compared to some of the shiny plastic wrappers found on many Easter Eggs.

Montezuma's Absolute Black Easter Egg with Cocoa Nibs & Buttons

Ripping open the foil, the egg looked super shiny - I didn't want to break it!

Montezuma's Absolute Black Easter Egg with Cocoa Nibs & Buttons

But it had to be done...for reviewing purposes! The shell is nice and thick with the cocoa nibs peeking out in places. Biting into a piece, there's the classic rich cocoa flavour of the Absolute Black Dark Chocolate punctuated with some earthier notes from the nibs, which do a great job of breaking up the texture and preventing it becoming boring, as I imagine it would without any additions at all. The buttons make for a nice accompaniment to nibble on separately, although due to the rich nature of them you won't be eating a lot at once. They're nice to have a few with a cuppa.

I do think it would have been nice if Montezuma's had included some other kind of addition, like coated nuts or something, although that would be unfair to those with allergies. This egg is certainly king when it comes to being allergen free - no sugar, dairy, nuts, gluten or soya, so it caters for everyone! It's made in a factory that processes dairy and nuts, of course, so if you are super sensitive please be aware of this.

Overall, in my opinion this is a superb egg and probably better than the Hotel Chocolat 100% Dark I reviewed last year. Although that one was nice, this one is a bit smoother in taste and easier to eat.

If you're avoiding dairy or sugar - this is the egg for you! Find it on montezumas.co.uk (they deliver within 24 hours, so hurry if you want one by the weekend!)

On the topic of Easter Eggs, if you've ever wondered why we eat Eggs at Easter (hint: it's not because of Jesus!) here's an article from Montezuma's that explains all! https://www.montezumas.co.uk/blog/2017/04/why-do-we-eat-eggs-at-easter-2/

Coco Caravan Caramel Vegan Easter Eggs

Coco Caravan Vegan Chocolate Easter Eggs

A big thankyou to Coco Caravan for today's review. They kindly sent me some of their Raw Vegan Chocolate Caramel Eggs recently so I was super excited indeed - it's rare to get a vegan caramel! These are available from Coco Caravans website and consist of 8 raw dark chocolate eggs, containing a runny caramel made with coconut blossom sugar, coconut cream and oil and cashew nut paste. A caramel made without dairy - yay!

Coco Caravan Vegan Chocolate Easter Eggs

I like the simple and non pretentious packaging - they're wrapped in simply brown paper which feels rather rustic, plus makes it easy to recycle.

Coco Caravan Vegan Chocolate Easter Eggs

When trying to take a pic of the innards I accidentally squashed it - oops! As you can hopefully see above the caramel is super sticky and runny.

The eggs are two halves stuck together rather than a whole shell completely filled with caramel. I took a bite, and it wasn't quite what I expected. The flavour is earthy and punchy, and definitely that of a raw chocolate. It was nice and flavoursome and definitely made a change from regular dark chocolate. The caramel had that distinctive coconut sugar flavour, quite earthy and it tasted nice and sweet but I did feel the texture was just a little bit too runny to be a proper caramel.

Overall, these are very nice and a real treat if you're avoiding dairy, although personally I would prefer a chewier caramel. (I'm a sucker for chewy caramel, admittedly!)

Find them on cococaravan.co.uk

Holdsworth Sea Salted Caramel Eggs

A big thankyou to Holdsworth Chocolates for today's review, they sent me this lovely box of their Sea Salted Caramel Eggs some time ago now and I absolutely loved them. Just a heads up - I will be doing a competition with Holdsworth soon, so you'll be able to win a hamper of some of their delicious chocolates - stay tuned! In the meantime do check out their lovely range online.

Holdsworth Sea Salted Caramel Eggs

You can find Holdsworth Chocolates from John Lewis stores or buy them online. Their chocolates are handmade in Derbyshire using only quality ingredients, and all I've tried so far have been top notch! (FYI they do some amazing looking Peanut Butter Caramel Truffles!).

These Salted Caramel Mini Eggs come in a lovely box complete with a fun bunny design - it made me chuckle quite a bit. They would make a fantastic gift.

Holdsworth Sea Salted Caramel Eggs

Opening the wrapper the eggs looked like typical mini chocolate eggs and had a lovely milky aroma. The salted caramel is in two halves inside the eggs - I tried to split one open to get a shot but it proved a little tricky!

Holdsworth Sea Salted Caramel Eggs

They tasted AH-MAH-ZING. The chocolate is creamy and rich and clearly good quality (33% cocoa solids). The soft caramel too is great quality - it tastes homemade and authentic, soft, buttery, sweet, salty, and very very moreish! I loved these eggs, they're quite rich and satisfying so you won't want to eat too many at once, and are definitely worth the money. The caramel is also probably one of the best I've had in terms of sweet and salty balance - it was just right.

Overall, I think these are fantastic mini eggs and would make a great gift for anyone who likes good quality chocolates. If you need a last minute gift for a special someone you can't go wrong with a box of these this Easter.

Innocent Dairy Free Almond Milk Review

innoccent dairy free almond milk

Innocent, famous for their bottled smoothies have attempted to branch out in a few areas in recent years. They've done things like vegetable juices and Fruity Spring Waters, but now they've launched their own range of vegan and dairy free Nut Milks, made with just three ingredients, and no stabilisers or thickeners. This is certainly a good move, since many who buy nut milks are tired of all the weird things added in brands likes Alpro.

I picked up this 750ml bottle for £1.99 in Waitrose, I think it was an introductory offer but I'm not sure. There was also a Hazelnut variety there and I believe Innocent make a Coconut version too.

Consisting of just almonds, sea salt and spring water, I didn't think there was much I would be able to say about this and I was right - it tastes as you would expect. If you've ever made nut milk at home this is pretty much the same thing, just pressed nuts and water. It has a slight marzipan-ish taste from the almonds and is good mixed in tea or coffee, but I think it would work best in smoothies or shakes as the consistency is a little thin. This is to be expected due to the lack of thickeners so this isn't a criticism at all. I liked that it tasted natural - other nut milks inevitably taste weird in some way due to the added calcium, vitamins and stabilisers, but this tastes pretty fresh and clean.

Overall, there's not a lot to say about this Innocent Almond Milk other than it does what it's supposed to! I would buy this again over other nut milks to avoid the unwanted additives, and I'll certainly be on the lookout for the Coconut version as I do tend to prefer coconut milks in general.

Ingredients: Spring Water, Almonds (5.8%), Sea Salt

Nestle Ruby Kitkat to launch in the UK!

Nestle Ruby Kitkat

Good news snack lovers, Nestle are going to launch their much-hyped Ruby Kitkats in the UK - hurrah!

Nestle Ruby Kitkat

The Kitkats, first launched in China last year are made with naturally pink-coloured Ruby cocoa beans and will go on sale in Tesco in four finger bars.

kitkat ruby

The specially coloured beans are grown in the Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Brazil and promise "an intense fruity taste". The chocolate was created by Swiss chocolatier Barry Callebaut - the world’s largest cocoa processor.

ruby cocoa beans

Nestle are calling Ruby Chocolate a "fourth chocolate", after traditional Milk, Dark and White. It's the first new natural colour for chocolate since Nestlé unveiled white chocolate more than 80 years ago.

The Kitkats will go on sale in the US and Europe following the UK launch. Wow - must be the first time we are getting a product launched here before other countries!

Do you fancy the look of the Ruby Kitkat? Have you seen it in shops yet? Let me know in the comments below!

Cadbury Dream Ice Creams - back for Summer! (UK)

If you've sorely missed Cadbury Dream White Chocolate since it was withdrawn from UK shelves many years ago, fear not, it's going to be back for Summer, albeit in a colder form - yes, ice cream! Dream Ice Creams have been in shops sporadically for several years now (including a Strawberry variety that was exclusive to Farmfoods) but finally they're getting an official release just for the Summer, yay! It will be sold in major supermarkets in packs of three, and impulse sticks will cost £1.80 from convenience stores.

Maybe Cadbury are testing the waters to see how popular they are...who knows, maybe the proper Cadbury Dream bar may be resurrected if sales are good!

cadbury dream ice cream

You can already find Cadbury Dream ice creams in Fultons Foods, a Northern based frozen food store if you're lucky enough to live near one (there's a store finder in the link above). I'm not sure if they sell imports or the official UK version, but here's some I spotted in there recently:

Have you tried these? Are they as good as Oreo Birthday Cake? Let me know in the comments!

Califia Farms Go Coconuts Coconut Milk

Califia Farms Go Coconuts Milk

I've been trying a lot of sugar free, dairy free vegan nut milks recently, in an effort to be healthy and find the best tasting ones. The results have been mixed, with the new Innocent Almond Milk being the best I've tried so far. Another new brand on the U.K market is Califia Farms, who make a range of nut milks and cold brew coffee drinks. Unlike other brands their range is free from the thickener carageenan, which has been linked to various health problems, and contain 50% more calcium than milk. Pretty impressive right?!

This Coconut variety is available from Waitrose, and Sainsbury's also used to stock it although I haven't seen it there recently. It's made from a blend of coconut and coconut water to give it an authnetic light coconut flavour without the need for added sugars.

Califia Farms Go Coconuts Milk

And it tastes pretty good! It has a creamy, frothy texture and tastes quite light and refreshing to drink. The added calcium is noticeable and does give it a slightly chalky taste which I wasn't too keen on though. Compared to Vita Coco Coconut Milk, I would say that one is nicer and closer to regular dairy milk than this is. But this is a decent enough alternative. What I don't like is the chunky bottle it comes in - yes it looks fancy, but it's very uneccesary and means more plastic to recycle. You don't get this problem with tetra packs.

Overall, this is a good coconut milk, although probably not one I would go out of my way for with the other alternatives on the market.

Ingredients: Coconut Milk (Water, Coconut Cream), Coconut Water, Calcium Carbonate, Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt, Potassium Citrate, Locust Bean Gum, Gellan Gum.
