Nim's Pear Fruit Crisps

Nim's Pear Fruit Crisps

Recently I read an article in The Grocer about Nim's Fruit Crisps and how they've become so popular they're now being sold in Tesco stores. After spotting some in my local Tesco Express I thought I'd give them a whirl to see what all the fuss is about. They're described as 100% natural, with no added sugar or sweetener, air dried rather than fried and are made in the UK. They're gluten free, dairy free, suitable for vegans, and certified as one of your portions of fruit and veg per day. I can't remember the exact price these were, but it was around £1 or so which is quite a bit for 22g of crisps, so I was hoping they'd be worth it!

Nim's Pear Fruit Crisps

Opening the bag, I tipped them into a bowl. They looked a bit like fried courgettes, or maybe it's just me?

Nim's Pear Fruit Crisps

It was obvious these were 100% natural going by appearances - honestly, they didn't look so great haha!

I've tried things like this before - such as Morrisons Carrot Crisps - so with these being fruit I was expecting them to be nicer in comparison, but honestly I didn't like them at all. The texture is weirdly chewy, despite their crunchy appearance and the taste is mild and not particularly fruity. They just seemed a bit "nothing-y" and weren't a very filling snack.

Overall, I'm a bit at a loss over what else to say about these other than I didn't enjoy them much and probably wouldn't buy them if I needed a healthy snack. If they were crunchier that might be an improvement, or maybe apple crisps would have more flavour. I don't know if they do an apple version but I'll certainly keep my eye out to do a comparison. These are certainly very healthy, but not for me taste wise.

Have you tried Nim's Fruit Crisps? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

New Maltesers Buttons

Another heads up; Mars UK are launching Maltesers Buttons! I'm not sure why there was a need for such a product (surely relaunching White Maltesers would have made more sense?) - rumour has it they're designed to contain less sugar due to the new UK Sugar Tax that recently came into force. These are due in shops in June.

Do you think Maltesers Buttons are a good idea? Let me know in the comments!

Ape Crunchy Coconut Bites Chocolate

I'm a big fan of Ape Snacks Crunchy Coconut Bites. When I tried them initally I was a bit iffy but since then I've bought a fair few packs, in fact they're my go-to snack now when I'm looking for something healthy and low in sugar. So I was excited when I saw this new Chocolate variety appear in Sainsbury's Express stores recenelty. It's pretty much the same recipe as the original plain bites, but with the addition of coconut nectar and cocoa powder.

Ape Crunchy Coconut Bites Chocolate

Like the original bites these are £1.50 and suitable for vegans, gluten free and the packs says "no added sugar", which I don't really agree with since they contain coconut nectar, which is pretty much a sugar. But hey ho, they're still healthy and lower sugar than most snacks of this nature.

They tasted pretty good, with a nice cocoa flavour and a subtle sweetness from the coconut nectar. I wouldn't say they were better than the original variety but they're a nice change and certainly a good addition to the range. I would personally like to see a chocolate coated variety - perhaps using unsweetened chocolate, which would be a real treat indeed for anyone avoiding sugar!

Overall, these a nice addition to the range and perfect if you want something with a chocolatey flavour that is still healthy. They're a great alternative to crisps or cereal bars.

Waitrose copying Hotel Chocolat bars?! (#slabgate)

waitrose eton mess chocolate

There's been a bit of a barney recently between luxury Chocolatier Hotel Chocolat and Waitrose - Waitrose have launched a new range of chocolate slabs with a similar design to Hotel Chocolat's selector range. Hotel Chocolat aren't happy about this at all, and offered customers an exchange of the Waitrose slabs for one of their Selector bars for free over the weekend. They've even gone as far as demanding Waitrose removes their bars from sale and destroys them! Wow...get that promo HC! ;)

The new range includes the Eton Mess White chocolate bar shown above, as well as...

waitrose espresso swirl chocolate

This Espresso Swirl bar, containing a mix of milk and dark chocolate with coffee bean pieces.

waitrose totally chocolate slab

There's also this Totally Chocolate variety, with a mix of milk, white and dark chocolate plus chocolate buttons.

waitrose gentle ginger
There's also this Gentle Ginger bar, with dark chocolate and ginger pieces. Unfortunately it isn't dairy free, sorry vegans :(

waitrose caramel crunch

Similar to one of Hotel Chocolat's top sellers, there's this Caramel crunch bar featuring caramel pieces and caramel milk chocolate buttons. There's also an Orange Chocolate bar in the range. The bars are currently on offer for £2 but usually cost £2.50.

As well as the above bars, Waitrose are doing a new range of boxed chocolates...

waitrose Salted Caramel Big Chocolate Buttons

There's Salted Caramel Big Chocolate Buttons, which are caramel-filled chocolate buttons similar to Cadbury Caramel Nibbles...

Sprite Lemon Lime and Cucumber Review

Sprite Lemon, Lime and Cucumber

Whilst in Tesco recently I spotted a rather new and unusual flavour of Sprite and must admit I had to do a double take - "Does that say cucumber?!" I thought. Yes, indeed it did, and as a new flavour I had to give it a try in the name of snacks science!

This variety is available in multipacks of cans or large 2 litre bottles in both Tesco and Morrisons. I went for the bottle which cost a pretty reasonable £1.

Sprite Lemon, Lime and Cucumber

The ingredients consist of fizzy water, sweeteners, citric acid and natural flavourings. I'm not usually a fan of drinks like this due to the artificial sweeteners, but we can let that slide once in a while right?

Opening the bottle I was met with a cucumber aroma that wasn't really enticing...in fact my reaction was "ewww!" But nevertheless I took a sip, and after the initial faint cucumber flavour disappeared I was met with the traditional sweet lemon and lime Sprite flavour. It's actually not too bad at all and is rather refreshing - I certainly drank a fair bit. I've heard that it tastes better with gin, which I can't vouch for but I'm sure is true!

Overall, not a bad flavour once you get past the initial "ewww" factor. I don't imagine these will stick around for long so if you like the sound of this flavour make the most of them!

Ingredients: carbonated water, citric acid, sweeteners (acesulfame k, aspartame), acidity regulator sodium citrate, cucumber extract, natural lemon and lime flavourings with other natural flavourings.

Waitrose Espresso Swirl Chocolate Review (#slabgate)

Waitrose Espresso Swirl Chocolate

So there's been a big fight recently between Waitrose and luxury chocolatier Hotel Chocolat; the latter have claimed that Waitrose's new chocolate slab range are copying their famous Selector bars (see my #slabgate post for pics of the new range). They've even gone as far as taking legal action, but that hasn't stopped Waitrose who launched their new range this week. I thought I'd try one of the bars to see what all the fuss is about - would it live up to Hotel Chocolat's high standards?

I chose the Espresso Swirl bar as it appealed to me the most; these are currently on offer for £2 and this bar is described as "Marbled Belgian milk and dark chocolate delicately swirled with hazelnut praline and coffee, topped with chocolate mocha beans". Sounds delightful doesn't it?

Waitrose Espresso Swirl Chocolate

Opening the wrapper it was definitely reminiscent of Hotel Chocolat's slabs, the sides are curvy although less so than a HC bar.

Waitrose Espresso Swirl Chocolate

One side contains the coffee beans whilst the other is divided into blocks. It certainly looks aesthetically pleasing.

Waitrose Espresso Swirl Chocolate

I broke off a few pieces and took a bite. The chocolate is pretty creamy, but in a standard "supermarket own brand" kind of way, it's not particularly distinctive. I couldn't really taste the hazelnut praline at all as it got a bit lost in the coffee flavour. The "mocha beans" (not actual coffee beans) are a nice touch but don't add much more to the bar. Overall it's a pleasant enough chocolate bar, but far from amazing and certainly not something I would buy regularly. In terms of quality it doesn't compare to Hotel Chocolat at all.

All in all, as my first try of this new range I can kind of see why Hotel Chocolat might be upset. The quality is nowhere near as good but no doubt Waitrose customers will buy these bars thinking they're similar to or even made by Hotel Chocolat.

NEWS JUST IN! Waitrose have decided to stop selling the new bars after talks with Hotel Chocolat: "it is not in our interest to enter into a protracted legal dispute with Hotel Chocolat, and so we have decided not to restock this product once the existing chocolate bars have sold".

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar Review

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar

Ruby Chocolate is becoming quite trendy now in the confectionery world it seems. It's been described as a "fourth" type of chocolate, after traditional milk, dark and white chocolate, and is pretty much a type of fruity chocolate thanks to the cocoa beans used. Nestle recently launched their own Kitkat Ruby bars in the UK to capitalize on the trend, but other companies are also making versions of the pink stuff. Enter Prestat, a London company famous for making quality handmade chocolates.

Prestat kindly sent me some of their range to review recently, spanning the history of their company from the launch of their first The Red Box in the 1950's, to the present day when Ruby Chocolate was created. I'm starting with the bar version, but Prestat also sent me some Ruby Chocolate Discs as well as The Red Box, which I'll review separately.

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar

Ruby chocolate is made from Ruby cocoa beans, which are especially selected for their exceptional colour and forest fruit flavours. The ingredients consist of cocoa butter, milk powder, sugar and cocoa mass, so this isn't technically the same as white chocolate which contains no cocoa solids. The main difference here is that cocoa solids are lower down in the ingredients compared to milk or dark chocolate.

I do like the bar design, it looks very special with the Prestat logo printed on each block. The blocks are quite chunky, which is just what I like from my chocolate bars!

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar

It tastes very lovely indeed, like a good quality white chocolate with a distinctive fruity edge. Not so much tart like you get from raspberries but more like how fine quality cocoa tastes fruity. It's very nice, and rather subtle and refreshing without being too sweet or overpowering (as I imagine the Kitkat Ruby might be!) It's creamy enough without being milk dominated like white chocolate. The main thing I noticed though was how good the quality is - compared to most chocolate companies it's pretty high up there. Prestat have definitely earned their name as a quality chocolatier; a lot of effort has obviously gone into the production of their products.

Overall, as an introduction to Ruby Chocolate this bar was very lovely and it's something I would buy for sure. It'd make a great gift for anyone who likes white chocolate...or pink-coloured things!

For more info or to buy this bar check out Prestat's website: http://www.prestat.co.uk/

Ingredients: Sugar, cocoa butter, skimmed milk powder, whole milk powder, cocoa mass, emulsifier soya lecithin, citric acid, natural vanilla flavouring.

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Thins

Following on from my review of the Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar, today's review is for their Ruby Chocolate Thins. I was super excited to try these, perhaps even moreso than the bar because who doesn't love nibbly pieces of chocolate - they looked like buttons, albeit very large buttons! They're made with the same ingredients as the bar version, a mixture of cocoa butter, milk powder and ruby cocoa. The cocoa solids are lower in the ingredients list that regular chocolate, making this more of a creamy chocolate akin to white chocolate, but with a fruity, slightly tart edge.

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Thins

How pretty do they look? I mean I'm not usually one for pink coloured things but these are rather special indeed!

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Thins

The discs or "thins" were nice and big, perfect for nibbling on and felt like a real treat indeed. The taste is fruity, creamy and slightly sharp, like that of a good quality cocoa but toned down with a creamy edge from the milk powder. They're highly moreish, and I certainly ate more than a few in one sitting! They're also handy for melting in this form - I used some to top cookies with and they looked and tasted wonderful. I can imagine many great creations will be made with this chocolate, and I do look forward  to seeing what other products come out in the future.

Bravo Prestat, these are delightful!

So Free Dairy Free Milk Chocolate Alternative

Today's review is for Plamil, who sent me some dairy free chocolates a while ago, but they're back today to get the review treatment with their So Free Milk Chocolate Alternative bar - a dairy free, vegan organic bar made with 45% cocoa and lower in sugar than the average milk chocolate bar. This is a bar perfect for those on a dairy free or vegan diet, and is great for use in baking or just eating!

So Free Dairy Free Milk Chocolate Alternative

I chose the latter of course. I like that this bar has a higher cocoa content than some dairy free chocolates, it tastes like you're actually eating chocolate rather than just sugar! The rice powder used to replace the milk works well to give it a creamy, soothing edge that makes a fine dairy substitute. It's not exactly the same of course, but that's to be expected. I imagine this would be great used in brownies or cookies - and luckily Plamil make some dairy free baking chips just for that purpose. For more info see their website: https://www.plamilfoods.co.uk/

So Free Dark Chocolate with Coconut Blossom Sugar

So Free Dark Chocolate with Coconut Blossom Nectar

Another Plamil review today and this time it's for their So Free Organic Dark Chocolate sweetened with Coconut Blossom Sugar. This bar is dairy free, vegan and contains 67% cocoa solids and replaces white sugar with coconut sugar. So how does this affect the taste?

So Free Dark Chocolate with Coconut Blossom Nectar

Opening the wrapper it smellt very rich with a distinctive almost treacle-like aroma, which is presumably the coconut sugar. I do find coconut sugar generally has that kind of taste, which is very different from white sugar but nice in its own way - it lends an almost caramel flavour to chocolate.

So Free Dark Chocolate with Coconut Blossom Nectar

The taste is interesting...the coconut sugar is very prominent, and like I said it does have that treacle-like flavour which is quite strong. To be honest I'm not sure it worked with the dark chocolate, I think the cocoa clashes too much with it. A milkier chocolate might have been better (the Waitrose 1 Indian Ocean Bar is a good example of coconut sugar that tastes great in chocolate).

Overall, not a bad bar at all and this is certainly great quality, and perfect for anyone wanting to reduce their sugar intake or avoid white sugar. But I would like to see a version with a milkier/creamier chocolate recipe, perhaps with added coconut milk.

Marks & Spencer Toasted Coconut Pots

Marks & Spencer Toasted Coconut Pots

Today's review is somewhat more healthy than usual, since I've been on a bit of a health kick again recently. I'm a fan of toasted coconut chips to help  stay away from chocolate bars, however my major gripe is usually the price - they almost always cost a lot for a small amount! That was no exception with this new variety from M&S, which costs £1.20 for a little pot. Still I thought I'd give it a try to see how it compares to the likes of Ape Coconut Curls and Urban Fruit Coconut Chips.

Marks & Spencer Toasted Coconut Pots

Unlike most toasted coconut chips these ones still have some of the shell on them, which may be a good thing or not depending on you. I suppose if you're looking for extra fibre it's a plus, but it certainly doesn't make them tastier.

Marks & Spencer Toasted Coconut Pots

They were a bit tasteless to be honest. They were very fresh, I'll give them that, but there was no real toasty flavour. It's almost like they were too scared to toast them too much so they ended up somewhere in between regular bland coconut chips and slightly toasted.

Overall, these are handy if you need a quick, sugar free low carb snack but otherwise, I wouldn't bother with them. Look out for better options such as Holland and Barrett Crisp Coconut, Ape Coconut Curls, or Urban Fruit Coconut Chips if you're eating sugar.

Charlene's Chocolate Factory Bubblegum Blonde

Charlenes Chocolate Factory Bubblegum Blonde

Today's review is for a rather novel chocolate, it was kindly sent to me by Charlene's Chocolate Factory, a company inspired by Charlie And The Chocolate Factory specializing in unique flavour combinations. I chose this one because it sounded rather special indeed. Not only is it made from white chocolate, it's bubblegum flavoured and coloured bright blue - how cool is that?!

Charlenes Chocolate Factory Bubblegum Blonde

Opening the wrapper it had a super strong bubblegum aroma...I was kind of expecting this to taste a bit too sickly. Luckily the taste works; it's creamy and super sweet of course but has a strong bubblegum flavour, that will remind anyone of being a kid again.

Overall, there's not actually much I can say about this bar because it tastes as you'd expect - like sweet bubblegum with a creamy edge! Definitely one for the kids (and big kids)!

Charlene's Chocolate Factory Mint Choc Chip

Following on from the Bubblegum Blonde Chocolate from Charlene's Chocolate Factory, today's review is for their Mint Choc Chip bar, a green-coloured white chocolate containing mint and milk chocolate chips. You can buy this from Charlene's website here: https://www.charleneschocolatefactory.co.uk

The name Charlene's Chocolate Factory is of course based on the classic film Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, and their range includes some unique and unusual flavoured bars, from Gin and Tonic to Basil & Rosemary, and even Marmite. They certainly have something for everyone!

Charlene's Chocolate Factory Mint Choc Chip

While the colour of the Bubblegum Blonde bar may have been a bit out there, this one is more reminiscent of the innards of a Mint Aero, which is quite comforting - you know to expect sweet minty goodness!

And that's exactly what this bar is, sweet minty white chocolate, offset with the milk chocolate chunks. It's sweet and it works very well, the milk chocolate chunks break up the sweetness a little and also look pretty cool embedded in the bar.

Overall, this is a tasty bar and definitely one for the mint chocolate lovers. To buy this or any other bars from the range check out:

Koko Dairy Free Cheddar Cheese Alternative

Koko Dairy Free Cheddar Cheese Alternative

I've tried quite a lot of dairy free chocolate bars and other products now, but cheese is one thing that has eluded me. I did try Violife briefly but haven't bought it regularly as it apparently contains wheat starch in the ingredients - boo! So I was pretty excited when I found this new Dairy Free Cheddar Alternative made by Koko in Waitrose the other day. It's on an introductory offer, I forget the exact price now but it was around £1.79 or so. There's a Koko Dairy Free Cream Cheese alternative too, which I didn't buy.

Koko Dairy Free Cheddar Cheese Alternative

Described as "mature but mellow", this is a coconut based alternative to cheddar with added calcium and vitamins D2 and B12. It has cococnut oil, coconut cream and potato starch as the main bulk of the ingredients, and is "Vegetarian Society Vegan Approved", which made me chuckle...couldn't they get it approved by the actual Vegan Society? I guess second best is better than nothing at all!

Koko Dairy Free Cheddar Cheese Alternative

It comes in a block that looks pretty much like regular cheddar cheese, and has a vague cheddar like aroma too. It cuts a bit more softly than cheddar though, which is handy.

Koko Dairy Free Cheddar Cheese Alternative

It tastes pretty good, and more cheese-like than I was expecting. It's definitely mature yet mellow like it's described; I think the coconut cream is what mellows it out yet there's also a sharper flavour from some of the other ingredients. It somehow works and tastes like a mild cheese. It's pretty good, and nice to nibble on in chunks. I didn't try melting it although I did add it as a topping to cooked rice, but I preferred eating it by itself. I imagine it'll make a great filling for sandwiches or on toast - if anyone does toast it please let me know how well it melts in the comments!

Koko Dairy Free Cheddar Cheese Alternative

Overall, as a coconut based "clean" cheese that contains no nasties like corn, nuts, soya or gluten this is pretty darn good! It's something I can see myself buying again which I can't say for other types of vegan cheese. If you are on a restricted diet or have allergies, this is certainly the cheese for you!

Ingredients: Water, stabiliser: modified potato starch, coconut oil (21%), coconut cream (8%), salt, vegetable glycerine, tri-calcium phosphate, acetic acid, natural flavouring, colour: carrot juice concentrate, lactic acid, vitamin D2, vitamin B12.

Charlene's Chocolate Factory Beet It Bar

Another review from the rather interesting Charlene's Chocolate Factory today, who make a wide variety of funky chocolate bars from the likes of the blue Bubblegum Blonde bar to Mint Choc Chip, and others like Gin and Tonic and even Marmite! Find them on their website here:

https://www.charleneschocolatefactory.co.uk/

Yes there's definitely something for everyone, even to the point of catering for the vegetable lovers with this "Sweetened Dark Chocolate with Beetroot". I chose this one to review out of pure curiousity...just how would the familiar earthy vegetable taste in chocolate form?!

Containing 60% cocoa solids and powdered beetroot, the bars weigh 90g and have a lovely pink patterned design on one side - the other side is regular blocks.

Charlene's Chocolate Factory Beet It Bar

I took a bite. The taste is...not as weird as I expected! It's surprisingly sweet, and I certainly didn't expect it to lend a nice mild flavour to the chocolate. Yes there's the earthy unmistakable beetroot taste in there, but it's pretty tame and works rather well. The chocolate is rich and at just the right percentage of cocoa.

Overall, this is another interesting flavour from Charlene's Chocolate Factory and worth a try if you like the more unusual stuff! To see the rest of their range, which includes flavours like Orange White Chocolate, JD and Coke (!) and Apple & Rhubarb Crumble check out:

Prestat The Red Box Review

prestat the red box

Amongst the treats Prestat sent me recently, such as the Ruby Chocolate Bar and Ruby Chocolate Thins they also sent me this box of truffles named The Red Box. Originally conceived of in the 1950s, "this delightful box adorned the drawing rooms and ballrooms of the stateliest of Britain’s homes and could be found in the green rooms of London’s famous West End Theatres". Prestat truffles were also "adored" by Roald Dahl, creator of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

prestat the red box

Beautifully presented, the chocolates come in three types: dark, milk and of course white. The flavours are Sweet Clementine, Earl Grey and London Gin & Lemon. I started off by trying the Earl Grey since I'm a big fan of earl grey tea.

prestat the red box

Encased in milk chocolate, the truffle contains milk chocolate ganache infused with earl grey tea, and you can just about see the specks of tea in it. It tastes delicious! The chocolate is high quality whilst the creamy ganache is very comforting with the bergamot earl grey flavours. Yum!

prestat the red box

The Sweet Clementine is somewhat richer, as it contains 60% cocoa dark chocolate with a clementine oil ganache. The filling is nice and zesty, and works very well with the richer chocolate. Definitely one for those who like orangey chocolate combinations.

prestat the red box

Last but not least, the Gin and Lemon! Combining a London Gin, lemon and touch of fizz filling with smooth 28% cocoa white chocolate, this is perhaps the star of the box, perfect for any gin fanatic! The creamy chocolate offsets the boozy filling beautifully...I really enjoyed this one and I'm not usually a fan of alcoholic chocolates.

Overall, what can I say but this is definitely a very special box of chocolates. All high quality, unique and tasty and very British too! If you haven't tried it yet I would highly recommend doing so - it would also make a rather special gift.

Marks & Spencer Single Origin 100% Cocoa Dark Chocolate

Marks and Spencer 100% Cocoa Single Origin Dark Chocolate

When I'm avoiding sugar I do like a good 100% cocoa dark chocolate bar. They're hard to find in most shops, but luckily thanks to Sainsbury's the Montezuma's Absolute Black is becoming widely available - handy for anyone on a low carb diet. But now M&S are here to challenge it with their own version of 100% cocoa chocolate, a Single Origin Fairtrade bar made in Peru. This bar costs £2 for 100g and is available in most of their larger stores.

Marks and Spencer 100% Cocoa Single Origin Dark Chocolate

There's a Taste Profile inside the case, which mentions notes of red fruits and honey, as well as a whisky that pairs well this chocolate. Steady on M&S, are you trying to get me drunk?!

Marks and Spencer 100% Cocoa Single Origin Dark Chocolate

Make no mistake about it, this is a very, very dark chocolate and one that I imagine is just too much for most folks. It's intense, and has that fruity acidic flavour that is common with unsweetened chocolate. The description of red berry flavours is quite accurate; this does indeed taste strongly of berries, and is quite complex with a smoky aftertaste. If you're new to unsweetened chocolate it will no doubt be too much for you, but if you've tried a few varieties already you may just enjoy it. I was a bit unsure at first, but over time the flavour has grown on me and I now purchase this over the Montezuma's Absolute Black simply because of the cheaper price - it's handy to use in baking, or for homemade chocolate mousse or truffles.

Overall, this is only one for the serious dark chocolate lovers! If you've tried this bar, do let me know your thoughts in the comments...
