Cadbury Bubbles of Joy Duo Mint

$

Cadbury have recently added a few new products to their Bubbles of Joy mousse range: a limited edition white chocolate variety, an orange variety and also this Mint Duo. It looks suspiciously similar to the Aero Mint Mousse already produced by Nestle...there seems to be a bit of copying going on in the snacks world lately!

I found these for only 50p in Heron Foods, they were still in date so I'm not sure why they were being sold so cheap.

There didn't seem to be much in each pot, they're very dinky so I'm glad I didn't pay too much. There's a section of green-coloured mint mousse and regular chocolate mousse.

It's basically just light mousse that tastes somewhat minty and chocolatey. I didn't like them to be honest, the texture wasn't airy enough and was rather gelatinous. If you're a fan of Aero Mint mousse I would stick with those instead!

Haagen Dazs Vanilla & Florentine Almond Orange Caramel (limited edition)

Recently I broke my "sugar free" diet and went on a mini snacks binge, so since Heron Frozen Foods were selling these limited edition Haagen Dazs I couldn't resist giving them a try. I loooove Haagen Dazs ice cream, it's probably even nicer than Ben and Jerrys for quality. This limited edition is one I've only seen in Waitrose before; I'm not sure if it was meant to be a Summer Edition, but it seems it's now being discontinued so these probably won't be in shops again for a while.

It's basically regular vanilla Haagen Dazs with chunks of almond florentine and swirls of orange flavoured caramel.

The combination is very interesting and naturally very tasty thanks to the delicious Haagen Dazs ice cream, but I'm not sure it works perfectly as a combination. It's not something I would choose over other Haagen Dazs flavours, but it's something that's nice to try as a one-off. I can see why they're only limited edition.

Overall, this is a nice change from the regular Haagen Dazs flavours but it's not the best. I wouldn't miss it if it never makes a return...I hope they try something different for their next limited edition, perhaps they could try cinnamon or something like that.

The Licktators John Lemon Lemon Curd Ice Cream

$

Heron Frozen Foods have recently been selling some new ice creams from The Licktators for the bargainous price of only £1.50 a tub, so naturally, I simply couldn't refuse to try them! The flavours included are Lemon Curd, Popcorn and Chocolate Praline.

Like all The Licktators ice creams, it comes with a pun in the name...this one is John Lemon, presumably to tie in with the "British" theme The Licktators love so much?

Whilst I "imagine" some John Lenon fans (and possibly Yoko Ono) might be incensed by this change of name, I think it adds an amusing touch. But what's most important of course is the taste...and I think John would've approved of such a delicious ice cream!

This is simply one of the nicest ice creams I've had in ages, but then maybe I'm just easily pleased! It's a simple vanilla ice cream with lots of tangy lemon curd sauce rippled through, and there's a generous amount of it too. It's very strong and refreshing and if you love lemon curd tarts as I do, you'll adore this; it works beautifully!

My only gripe is they use a thickener called carrageenan in the ingredients - this is a type of seaweed which can cause stomach upset in sensitive types (like myself!) - just google it if you want to know the gory details - but needless to say, it's not a good additive. I did suffer some tummy upset after eating this, and I don't usually have troubles with ice creams like Haagen Dazs since they don't use such thickeners, so I could definitely tell the difference.

Sensitivity aside, the carrageenan likely won't be a problem for most people, and this is such a tasty ice cream I can overlook it on this occasion, but be aware of it if you do have food sensitivities. This still gets a big thumbs up from me - be sure to look out for The Licktators ice cream in Heron Foods, or The Co Op (unfortunately The Co Op charge extortionate prices - boo!)

Thorntons Candyfloss Truffle Chocolates

Recently I spotted a new range of limited edition Thorntons chocolates at WH Smiths, so naturally I couldn't resist giving them a try, not when the flavours are as interesting as these! They include Toffee Apple Caramels, Toasted Marshmallow Truffles and also these Candyfloss Parfait Truffles. You can vote for the flavour you want to stay on shelves via Thorntons website www.thorntons.co.uk/vote.

These are described as "Candyfloss flavour parfait in white chocolate with pink sugar sprinkles", but the filling also contains raspberry powder to give it that pink colour. They cost £1 a bag, or you can get them on offer of 2 for £1.60 at Wh Smiths. Weirdly, they cost £3 a bag in actual Thorntons stores!

They're nice and there's a definite sweet raspberry flavour, but it's very sugar dominated! That's all I could really taste, which I guess is no surprise since Candyfloss is pretty much just sugar. The white chocolate was overpowered by the filling, which is saying something since white chocolate is very sweet anyway. These really are sugar bombs!

Overall, I think these Candyfloss chocolates are a nice idea that don't really work in practice. They look good but they're just far too sweet to be enjoyable.

RATING: 6 out of 10

Stay tuned for a review of the Toffee Apple & Marshmallow varieties which were much nicer!

Thorntons Toffee Apple Caramels

Thorntons have brought out some new limited edition chocolates, available directly from their stores or Wh Smiths. I highly recommend only buying them from WH Smiths though as they're much cheaper there! The flavours include Candyfloss Truffles (which I reviewed yesterday), Toasted Marshmallow Truffles and these Toffee Apple Caramels. You can vote for the flavour you want to remain on shelves via Thorntons website: www.thorntons.co.uk/vote.

These are described as "soft gooey caramels flavoured with apple juice and wrapped in milk chocolate", and as you can see in my pics, they seem to have attracted the attention of the local pigeons!

I can see why the pigeons were so interested...these are some tasty caramels! I wasn't a fan of the Candyfloss truffles in this range as they were so sweet, however these were perfect. They're runny, gooey soft caramels which is always the best type in my opinion, with a lovely refreshing apple tang. The flavour actually works well, it's not too weak or strong, and gives a perfectly balanced toffee apple taste. The chocolate is rich enough to balance out the sweet caramel (30% cocoa), but is still milky and comforting, as Thorntons chocolate tends to be.

Overall, these are some very tasty chocolates and they're the ones to get my vote out of these new flavours. If you love toffee apples, these are definitely worth a try!

RATING: 8.5 out of 10.

Stay tuned for my review of the Toasted Marshmallow Truffles in this range!

Last (but not least) of my reviews of the new limited edition Thorntons chocolates are these Toasted Marshmallow Truffles. They cost £1 a bag (or two for £1.60) at Wh Smiths. The other two flavours are Candyfloss Truffles and Toffee Apple Caramels, and you can vote for the ones you want to remain on shelves via Thorntons website: www.thorntons.co.uk/vote.

These are described as "marshmallow flavour truffle dipped in dark and milk chocolate, sprinkled with coconut". I wasn't quite sure what to exoect from a marshmallow truffle since marshmallows are mostly just sugar and gelatin...

Turns out they were very tasty, I'm not sure they tasted of marshmallow really but they were very creamy with a lovely coconut edge. In fact it was the coconut combined with the richer dark chocolate that made these stand out to me, they were very moreish and the sweet truffle contrasted very nicely with the richer chocolate coating.

Overall, these are some tasty truffles and if you like coconut chocolates I'd recommend giving them a try. They won't be getting my vote out of the three flavours, but I liked them a lot more than the Candyfloss variety.

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Have you tried these new Thorntons chocolates? If so which flavour was your favourite?

The Licktators Jiggy Pop Popcorn Ice Cream

Recently, Heron Foods started selling some of The Licktators ice creams for only £1.50 a tub, so naturally I couldn't say no to giving them a try! The flavours include the "John Lemon" lemon curd ice cream which I reviewed previously, a praline chocolate variety and also this "Jiggy Pop" popcorn flavour. I haven't tried a popcorn ice cream since Butterkist brought out their own ice cream, which sadly now seems to have been discontinued. Boo!

This ice cream contains pieces of popcorn, toffee sauce, and crunchy caramel pieces and is absolutely delicious! I previously complained that the Marshmallow Law variety was a little boring and needed something extra to jazz it up, well I certainly can't complain of that here! All the elements work perfectly together, the popcorn pieces add a nice crunch, the toffee adds gooey delicious sweetness and the caramel pieces add extra crunchy sweetness, all wrapped in delicious creamy ice cream. For £1.50 this is an absolute steal, and nicer than a lot of other ice creams out there.

Overall, this is a fantastic ice cream from The Licktators. I hope to see more of their interesting flavoyrs in shops, and hopefully not at the extortionate prices The Co Op charge for them!

Westin Gourmet Online Meat

As my readers may know, I recently quit sugar, and it's been tough to stay off it with so many new snacks in the shops, and so I've found myself in search of more healthier foods and snacks! One thing I've been getting into a lot recently is grass fed meat. Grass fed meat is popular with those following The Paleo Diet, as it contains more nutrition and healthy fats compared to meats fed on grains. It also tastes muuuuch better!

I was recently contacted by Westin Gourmet who actually deliver quality grass fed meats online, which is a great idea since it can be so difficult to find good meat locally. They do a nice range from poultry, beef, lamb, pork, burgers, sausages, steaks as well as seafood and cheese. All their meat is responsibly sourced, British and with high welfare standards and they've even won a Great Taste Award for 2015. The meat arrives chilled upon delivery, and is never frozen.

To peruse Westin Gourmet's meats check out http://www.westingourmet.co.uk.

I'm hoping to try some of their stuff soon, and will hopefully have a review up shortly!

Boots Gluten Free Salted Caramel Chocolate Crunch

Whilst in Boots recently I noticed they had a few new gluten free snacks. They were hard to spot; this slice had the words gluten free perched on the side of the label very inconspicuously. As well as this slice they also had a coconut slice - review due soon!

This is described as a chocolate and caramel rice crispy base with nuts, salted caramel and chocolate, and cost just over £1 as I recall. I didn't keep a receipt so I can't remember exactly!

As you can see it looks pretty much the same as a millionaires caramel shortcake, but with rice crispies as the base. And that's pretty much how it tasted, like rice crispies with salted caramel and chocolate.

I want to say I enjoyed this, really I do, but the salted caramel actually spoilt it. Don't get me wrong I love me some salted caramel, but in this case it was a little too salty and distracted too much from the sweeter caramel and chocolate flavours. But alas, that's always the problem with salted caramel isn't it? It's either too salty or not quite salty enough, it seems like a balance that's hard to get right.

Overall, this is still a nice slice and is a great option for those who can't eat gluten, but I think Boots would do better to make it regular caramel rather than salted. Regardless, it's great to see Boots catering for the gluten free market, bravo for that!

Boots Gluten Free Lemon & Coconut Slice

Following on from my review of the Boots Gluten Free Salted Caramel slice, here we have their handcrafted Lemon & Coconut Slice. It's part of some new gluten free options Boots have quietly added to their range recently.

It's described as a "soft chewy base topped with lemon curd and a sweet coconut layer", and contains maize and egg whites, so not suitable if you have an a egg or corn allergy.

I have to say it tasted delicious, I much preferred it to the Salted Caramel Slice as the coconut and lemon flavours were spot on...creamy and coconutty yet tangy and zingy.

I also loved how moist the slice was, despite containing coconut which can often make some cakes rather dry, this was deliciously moist and a delight to bite into.

Overall, if you're celiac or gluten sensitive then this is a fantastic option! It tastes just like a regular cake, which is what most folks sensitive to gluten really want, so bravo to Boots for coming out wth these!

Marks & Spencer Dairy Free Coconut Cream Dessert

Since it was my birthday recently, naturally I've been on the sugar again after an extended detox (don't ask!), so I finally decided to give this Dairy Free Coconut Cream dessert a try that's been winking at me from the frozen aisle of Marks & Spencer for quite some time. Coconut is the "in thing" right now, you'll find coconut oil flying off the shelves (almost literally) in Holland & Barrett, coconut milk drinks in most supermarkets, and even coconut water in your local Tesco Express. So coconut ice cream was only the next logical step really!

This cost me a very reasonable £3 at M&S, and contains 30% coconut cream as well as coconut oil, sugar and maltodextrin.

Like many of my snacks I ate it on the go, this time at the local park. Whilst I did get some jealous looks from the ducks and pigeons, they certainly weren't getting any!

The ice cream, or rather "dessert" as M&S are calling it was frozen solid, more so than "real" dairy ice cream, presumably as coconut cream takes longer to melt. It tasted...okay. I'd like to say it was really delicious since I love all things coconut, but sadly it wasn't. It had an odd coconut flavour, not quite as rich and thick as regular coconut milk, and a weird aftertaste. It was pleasant enough and had a decent level of sweetness that wasn't overpowering, but still it wasn't all that exciting.

If you're sensitive to dairy and in need of a frozen dessert fix, this isn't a bad option, I'm sure it would go perfectly with some berries, but I reckon there's probably nicer dairy free options out there. I've heard that Booja Booja make some good ones (although sadly they're not nut free). This effort from M&S is going to have to get a thumbs down from me unfortunately, it's just not very good for an M&S product.

If you're dairy free and have tried this, please let me know what you thought in the comments!

Thorntons Fabulous Fudge Pots Toffee

$

As a little birthday treat recently, I decided to spoil myself and give these new desserts from Thorntons a try. Thorntons are the masters of toffee and fudge, so combine that with "real Devon clotted cream" and surely they're onto a winner?!

The desserts cost £1.50 at Tesco and are described as "fudge mousse with a layer of toffee fudge dessert". Each pot contains 65g which is small, but they're so tasty and rich this is a good amount. Naturally though, I ate both in one sitting...call me piggy, but I can't imagine many people would eat just one pot!

It was a little difficult to distinguish between the layers as both are the same color, but the fudge layer had a nice sticky texture and was full of rich butterscotch flavour, whilst the mousse was smoother and lighter but equally as tasty. These are very indulgent desserts indeed, and far nicer than the similar Pots of Joy from Cadbury.

Overall, these are a win from Thorntons, I just wish I'd bought the chocolate variety as well!

RATING: 8 out of 10.

Gluten free, contains maize starch. Not suitable for vegetarians.

Cadbury Roses with New Almond Caramel Bite

$

A few years back now, when Cadbury introduced a "Coffee Escape" chocolate to Roses I did a scathing review of them...I was shocked at how much the quality had deteriorated since I last ate Cadbury Roses. So it may come as a surprise to readers that I'm reviewing them yet again...to be honest, I only bothered buying them as they were on special offer and I needed a fix of cheap chocolate! I was also curious to see what the new addition of "Almond Caramel Bite" tasted like. I presumed it would be a bit rubbish...but actually it turned out to not be as bad as expected!

The boxes have been redesigned again, with a slightly different shape and logo. I like them, they're eye catching, in fact the new shape means they look somewhat taller than boxes of Celebrations and Quality Street. They've also started using sealed packaging for the chocolates, before it was plastic twist wraps but they're now completely sealed. I have to say I think it's a good idea, they seemed a tad fresher tasting, although maybe I'm imagining it...I probably am!

All the classics are here, the Strawberry Dream, Orange Creme, Brazillian Darkness, Country Fudge, Golden Barrell, the Coffee Escape and Signature Truffles, as well as the new Almond Caramel Bite. I thought this would just a regular hard caramel with a few chopped almonds thrown in, but turns out it actually contains some bits of wafer too! This was a nice surprise, the wafer is the soft chewy type rather than crunchy, and added a nice differing texture to the harder chewy almond caramel. Colour me pleasantly surprised! A new chocolate that tastes nice and is a bit different, well done Cadbury!

Most of the chocolates were of course rather sickly and certainly not up to the standards Cadbury used to have, but when compared to the state of Quality (!) Street and Celebrations they're the best of a bad bunch. I still think it's a shame they have so many bland chocolates, they could do with taking out the chocolate truffle and replacing it with Turkish delight or even another fruit cream, just something a bit more exciting! As it stands though the Almond Caramel Bite is a nice addition, although I'm not sure most people will even notice that it's new.

Lindt Papaya Bar (99p Stores)

$

Whilst in 99p Stores recently I spotted this unique sounding chocolate bar from Lindt...with it being Papaya I just had to give it a try, it's not every day you see such a flavour combined with chocolate!

It was an imported bar so had a sticker on it with the English ingredients on. Unlike most Lindt chocolate bars it didn't contain any barley malt, which means it was safe for me to eat with my gluten sensitivity. It contained a milk cream filling with a layer of papaya "jam" on top, all coated in milk chocolate. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't quite as exciting as my imagination told me. It tasted okay, the milk filling was nice and creamy, but the papaya layer was a bit overly sweet. Papaya isn't really a great flavour to pair with chocolate really, it lacks tartness to balance out the sweetness.

Overall, I'm glad I tried something a bit different from Lindt but I can see why these are in 99p stores and not sold in most supermarkets. If you spot these I'd recommend giving one a try if you like papaya, but otherwise they're a miss.

I've seen other Lindt bars in discount stores recently such as a "Creme de menthe" and a pretzel milk chocolate bar, if you're a Lindt fan keep your eyes peeled for them!

Kingdom Banana Flavour Milk Chocolate

$

I originally reviewed Kingdom Chocolates a few years ago now, they brought out a range of bars proudly made in Britain (made by the same company as Montezumas) with flavours such as peanut butter and rhubarb, although I've not seen them in shops much since. I suspect the range may not have been a success and I can kind of see why...as nice as they are, they don't quite live upto what they promise.

I was surprised to find this banana variety in a local independent discount store recently. I never knew such a flavour existed and it's quite a bold flavour to combine with chocolate. It's basically a milk chocolate bar with a banana flavoured softer milk chocolate center. The milk chocolate was very creamy, rich and good quality although nothing particularly distinctive. The banana flavour was pleasant, although it didn't really blend well with the milk chocolate and the whole thing became a bit sickly after a few bites. I wasn't too impressed really. I think it would've worked a lot better with a softer, milkier filling to showcase the banana better; somewhat like a banana milkshake chocolate!

Overall, as nice as it is to see a banana flavoured chocolate, this is a bit of a miss. I'm surprised they didn't go for the classic British flavour combo of banana and custard to be honest!

Tesco Free From Fruit Loaf Cake

Before going on my recent sugar free diet, I tried a few different snacks which I haven't yet got round to reviewing...this new Tesco Free From Fruit Loaf Cake being one of them. I've always been partial to fruit cake so I wondered how it might taste without out the gluten.

Unfortunately it turned out to be a rather dry, bland cake filled with cheap sultanas and coated with hard crunchy sugar crystals. It just wasn't very appetising at all by itself, so I ended up slathering custard all over it to make it edible. This made it easier to eat, but it was still rather bland.

Come on Tesco, you can do better than this! Gluten free folk need cakes that taste just as good as the real thing! Other companies have achieved it so there's really no excuses. This is a miss for me.

RATING: 4 out if 10.

Chocologic No Added Sugar Dark Chocolate

$

It's no secret that I've been trying to quit the sugar recently, and to that end I've been trying a lot of different dark chocolates that contain none. They can sometimes be too bitter, so when I heard that Chocologic were launching in Tesco with their stevia sweetened chocolate I was overjoyed! In fact I nipped over as soon as I knew these were available!

Glancing at the ingredients I noticed the chocolate contains "alimentary fibres" which consist of dextrin, inulin and oligofructose. Presumably these are a bulking agent, since the chocolate contains only 55% cocoa. 4 segments of the bar contain 2.5g of carbs and 0.4g of sugars. That's a very low amount of sugar for chocolate, although 4 segments is a very tiny amount of the bar so don't be fooled.

Opening the wrapper, there was a faint whiff of cocoa but it wasn't too strong. As a fan of rich dark chocolate I was surprised by this.

Snapping off the top layer of 4 squares, I took a bite. At first I couldn't really detect much flavour...it was like a very mild semisweet dark chocolate...but without the sweetness. The sweetness from the stevia did hit me after a few bites, it was pleasant and mild and not bitter like some stevia can be. The problem though was that without the sweetness to make it moreish, and without the rich cocoa flavour of a strong dark chocolate, I didn't feel like I wanted to eat any more. It felt a little pointless actually, which may sound like a good thing if you're watching your weight but why buy chocolate if it doesn't make you want to scoff the whole thing?! It's meant to be a treat after all. I'd rather just do without than eat this chocolate which is neither here nor there. Maybe I would have fared better with the milk chocolate or hazelnut varieties...

Overall, as good as it is to see a lower sugar chocolate on shelves, I think it'd be better to go for a richer dark chocolate or just not bother eating chocolate at all. This is a miss from me I'm sad to say. I'll stick with my 100% cacao bars from Hotel Chocolat and Grenada Chocolate Co.

This bar cost £1.49 at Tesco, is suitable for vegetarians, contains soya, and may contain milk, nuts & gluten.

RATING: 6 out of 10.

Sainsbury's Strawberry Creme White Chocolate Bar

$

Whilst in Sainsbury's recently I noticed they had a few new interesting bars in their own brand range, amongst them this White Chocolate Strawberry Creme bar. As a long time fan of white chocolate I just couldn't say no!

The bar cost £1.29 which is very reasonable for a large 180g slab of chocolate. It's also fair trade which means it's good for the old conscience too...double win!

The white chocolate contains a sticky strawberry fondant center with 0.7% strawberry...not a lot, but enough to give it an authentic strawberry flavour.

The blocks were rather chunky and thick, each one giving a satisfying mouthful of creamy chocolate.

I really enjoyed this bar, the white chocolate is comforting and creamy but of course, very very sweet! It's not the best quality white chocolate around but it's pretty decent for the price. The strawberry fondant just adds to the sweetness of course but brings it a refreshing fruity edge, making the bar very sweet overall and probably one that kids will enjoy (not that I'm advocating giving this much sugar to children!)

Overall, a very tasty bar from Sainsbury's that's only safe for the very sweet-toothed!

Stay tuned for my review of Sainsbury's Wholenut White Chocolate...

Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramello (Irish) Review

$

0

Some time ago a blog reader requested that I review the Irish Dairy Milk Caramello, and since it apparently tastes nicer than our UK Dairy Milk Caramel I just had to give it a go.

I managed to find a bar from Morrisons for around 95p - not cheap for a small bar, but if the chocolate tastes good who cares? It comes in 8 small blocks that are somewhat square shaped, but not quite. It certainly looked better than the silly "curve shaped" blocks that Cadbury/Mondelez have introduced to UK Dairy Milk bars!

It also smelled somewhat different to UK Dairy Milk...somewhat richer and more chocolatey and creamy - like the Dairy Milk we all used to love before Mondelez tampered with the recipe! (They claim they haven't changed it, but it seems different to me...perhaps they're using a different milk supplier now?) Breaking off a piece, the caramel oozed out and had a lovely aroma. And it tasted gorgeous...a little more sticky than the UK version, but a lot more flavoursome - it was kind of buttery with a slight butterscotch taste. Combined with the creamy Dairy milk it was a match made in heaven.

Overall, I have to say this Irish Dairy Milk Caramello is definitely superior to the UK version. The chocolate recipe tastes different, like the old Dairy Milk we used to get in the UK, and this alone makes it worth a buy in my opinion. It costs more but it's worth it!

Ben & Jerry's Save Our Swirled Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry's have brought out a few new ice creams this year, exciting ones like Cinnamon Buns & Pumpkin Cheesecake, but sadly I can't eat those as they contain gluten. Boo! Luckily this new "Save our swirled" variety doesn't, so I had to give it a try when I spotted it recently!

It contains "Raspberry ice cream with marshmallow & raspberry-blackberry swirls & Chocolatey cone pieces". I wasn't too sure how this would turn out really, I haven't had raspberry ice cream in ages, so had pretty much forgotten what it tasted like.

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised, this ice cream was delicious! My first thought was "it tastes like jammy dodger ice cream". I dont know why, since it doesn't contain biscuit and I don't eat jammy dodgers anymore (gluten!), but the strong sweet raspberry flavour is very reminiscent of the jam in Jammie Dodgers.

I absolutely loved this ice cream. The raspberry blackberry swirls are sweet, fruity and maybe a little artificial tasting but in the best way possible. I couldn't really detect the marshmallow swirls, they got lost amongst the ice cream. The chocolatey cones were nice to chew on and had a good chocolate flavour that broke up the sweetness a bit.

Overall, I have to say this Save Our Swirled variety is a triumph! Of course, I can't not mention the reasoning behind the name: it's a call to action to help save the environment, something Ben and Jerry's have always supported. To learn more visit benjerry.com/climate.
